Firefighters spent four hours tackling more than ten tonnes of flaming rubbish at a Beckenham dump today.
Four engines and 25 firefighters were called to the Churchfields Road site, which handles household and garden waste, shortly before midday.
Around 12 tonnes of mixed household waste were alight inside a concrete transfer bay.
The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took 17 calls to the blaze, sending crews from Beckenham, Bromley and Forest Hill fire stations.
The incident was brought under control by 4.40pm.
There were no reports of any injuries.
Station Manager, Gary Thompson, who is at the scene said: "Firefighters are currently tackling a fire at a waste transfer station.
"This is likely to create smoke in the local area, so we are urging residents to please keep their windows and doors shut.
"There is also some disruption to roads, so we kindly ask locals to avoid the area whilst crews work to bring the fire under control.”
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
Churchfields Road reopened to the public on May 4, having closed due to lockdown.
A booking system has been set up, restricting visits to appointment only, with stringent social distancing measures to be enforced.
