Terps Mourn Passing of Former Head Coach Roy Lester

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland Football Family mourns the passing of former Terrapins Head Coach Roy Lester, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 96.

Lester first served at the University of Maryland as an assistant coach from 1956-58 and was later the head coach for three seasons from 1969-71.

Between his stints at Maryland, Lester was the head coach at Richard Montgomery High School from 1959-68. He led the Rockets to an 86-10-1 record including six undefeated seasons. His 1968 team was ranked third in the nation.

After his time at Maryland, Lester came back to coach in Montgomery County in 1972, leading Paint Branch to a Class B state championship in 1975 and Magruder to a Class B state championship in 1984 and a Class A state title in 1986.

Born in a small town in West Virginia, Lester was a three-sport athlete at West Virginia University. He's a member of several halls of fame including Richard Montgomery and West Virginia University. Richard Montgomery's football stadium/athletic field is named after Lester.

Lester (1923-2020) is survived by three sons and a daughter and several grandchildren.
