FALLS CHURCH, VA — Falls Church Police are urging residents to avoid stopping on roadways, notably West Broad Street, to pick up orders from businesses.

Numerous Broad Street businesses between Washington Street and Little Falls Street do not have on-street parking. These businesses have designated parking lots in the side or back. Police say citations can be issued for vehicles parked in roadways rather than parking spots.

"Stopping on a road like Broad Street -- or any road -- is extremely unsafe," said Police Chief Mary Gavin. "We appreciate everyone who supports our local businesses, but please be smart. The basic rules of the road still apply. Park in the proper lot, grab your meal, and be on your way home."

According to the Falls Church News-Press, a suggestion of closing a portion of westbound Broad Street was floated, but nothing was formally approved. Falls Church City Council approved other easements to zoning restrictions for businesses adjusting to the coronavirus crisis. Businesses are allowed to use temporary signs and banners promoting carryout and curbside service without needing a permit. In addition, businesses can take orders from their parking lot or vicinity of the business entrance and may use assigned parking spaces for takeout service.

Other changes include extending the second real estate tax payment for fiscal year 2020 from June 5 to July 6. The due date for the meals and transient occupancy taxes is also moved from May 1 to June 1.
