Majestic Reason, Tiz the Law: The week in social media

It was a quiet week in the racing world with countless tracks around the country shut down due to the threat of Covid-19. But despite the uncertainty that the world is feeling right now, the show still goes on for some. Over the weekend a talented colt took a step in his quest towards the Kentucky Derby, and a Maryland-bred mare began a new chapter of life.

Here is the 411 on what racing fans have been talking about on social media over the past week:

Majestic Reason leaves the track

With all the racetracks in the Mid-Atlantic area shutdown due to the Covid-19 outbreak, there hasn’t been much news stirring around in the racing world. But one mare that did find her name circling around social media pages this week was the Maryland-bred Majestic Reason, who has now been officially retired from racing.

Crowned as the champion Maryland-bred Older Female of 2019, Majestic Reason recorded six wins from thirteen starts and concluded her career with a win in the G3 Barbara Fritchie Stakes February 15. The five-year-old daughter of Majestic Warrior also won the Miss Disco Stakes and the Willa on the Move Stakes and finished out of the money just once.

Bred by Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds LLC and Ellen Charles, Majestic Reason was campaigned by Hillwood Stable LLC and Richard L. Golden. Trained by Maryland-based trainer Graham Motion, Majestic Reason was piloted to her biggest win by jockey Trevor McCarthy. During her time on the racetrack, the mare banked earnings of $462,998.

With her racing career now in the past, Majestic Reason will soon begin the next chapter of her life as a broodmare. Irish War Cry was the chosen stallion for Majestic Reason, and it was reported via Graham Motion’s Twitter page that the mare was bred on March 26.

A multiple graded stakes winner on the track, Irish War Cry is the millionaire son of two-time Horse of the Year and proven sire, Curlin. Irish War Cry recently entered stud in 2019 and stands for a fee of $6,500 at Northview Stallion Station in their Maryland location in Chesapeake City.

I fought the Law, and the Law won…

An unprecedented edition of the Florida Derby (G1) took place over the past weekend, with the 1 1/8-mile race forced to be run without spectators due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A major prep race for the Kentucky Derby, which will now be held on September 5 because of the coronavirus, the 2020 Curlin Florida Derby rewarded 100 points toward the “Run for the Roses” to post time favorite and winner Tiz the Law.

Owned by Sackatoga Stables and trained by Barclay Tagg, the connections that campaigned Funny Cide to glory in the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, Tiz the Law delivered a flawless performance to capture the Curlin Florida Derby by 4 ¼ lengths. After stalking the leaders for much of the race, Tiz the Law took command with startling ease and never looked back. With jockey Manny Franco aboard, the son of Constitution crossed the finish line in a final time of 1:50.00 on a track that was rated as fast. Shivaree, an 80-1 longshot lit up the board in second place, with Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) winner Ete Indien completing the trifecta.

A winner of four races from five starts, including the Champagne Stakes (G1) and the Holy Bull Stakes (G3), Tiz the Law would easily be among the favorites for the Kentucky Derby under normal circumstances. However, with the threat of the coronavirus pushing the date of the Kentucky Derby back until September, a lot can and will change between now and then. There have been no immediate plans for the colt’s next start, as his connections would prefer to wait and see what happens with racing’s uncertain schedule in these troubled times.
