Ahlers Center Hosts Virtual Alumni Speaker Series in April: 'Managing Under Uncertainty'

The Ahlers Center for International Business will host a talk by four of its MBA alumni this month under the title of "Managing Under Uncertainty" during this unprecedented time, according to Denise Dimon, PhD, associate provost for international affairs, USD School of Business economics professor and Ahlers Center director.

The talks are scheduled for April 7, 16, 23 and 28. Speakers will be joining us from Italy, Germany and the United States. All USD students, faculty, staff and alumni are welcome to join the sessions. Once you are registered, a Zoom meeting link and password will be sent.

Undergraduate students can earn one approved Passport/Compass/Connect point for each presentation.

Career Development Center and Alumni Association Present Virtual Interview Series

Beginning Monday, a series of pre-recorded virtual interviews with five USD alumni experts will be available for viewing. They will be talking about the economic outlook and how to navigate the uncertain job market created by COVID-19. These interviews also give a glimpse at a day in the life of these alumni and what they consider the key to their success and why.

The five alumni participants are: Aaron Blumenkranz, head of sales for Google (Career Tips from a Google Sales Leader); Moe Abouzari, Medical Science Liaison, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Jesse Hall, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Sublimity Therapeutics (Infectious Disease Experts Share the Latest on COVID-19); Garry Ridge, WD-40 CEO (Leading in Uncertain Times); and Andrew Holets, Chief Executive Officer for Pro Kids - First Tee of San Diego (Tips for Navigating Nonprofit Job Search through COVID-19).

Proposal Applications for Keck Undergraduate Humanities Research Fellows Program

The Humanities Center at USD is accepting proposals for its annual Keck Undergraduate Humanities Research Fellows Program. Proposals are due April 24.

As a Keck Research Fellow, students work under the close guidance of a faculty advisor to conduct original, substantial research, scholarly activities and/or creative work advancing the interdisciplinary humanities over the Fall and Spring semesters. When applying, students should identify a faculty member and topic of interest and develop the project proposal in collaboration with the faculty member.

Benefits of the fellowship program include a $2,800 stipend per semester ($5,600 total); research materials funds totaling $1,000 for the year; Conference travel funds totaling $1,000 for the year; and enrollment in 496 or 499 within the fellow's major or minor, or HUMS 499, for one unit of research or independent study in both the Fall and Spring.

Torero Program Board, Grad/Law Student Commons Host Virtual, Social Media Events

Just as remote classes are the norm this semester for all USD students, entities such as the Torero Program Board and the Graduate and Law Student Commons are both taking to their social media platforms to reach their audiences with fun activities to help pass the time while staying at home.

Follow the Torero Program Board on its Facebook page and the Instagram handle, @usdtpb, for daily themes of Make It Monday (DIY crafts and stuff), Tasty Tuesday (recipes), Wellness Wednesday (exercising), Trivia Thursday (trivia) for such prizes as gift cards and more. The themed days are slated to last until mid-May on these days.

Next week, the Graduate and Law Commons will host a Grad Student Appreciation Week's worth of fun activities. Check out Mindful Monday, Trivia Tuesday, Workout Wednesday, Open Mic Thursday and Affirmation Friday. You can do these virtual events and there will also be shout-outs for graduate and law students on social media pages, Facebook and Instagram, @USDGradLife. TPB and Grad and Law Student Commons are just two of many campus units utilizing social media and virtual opportunities to stay connected to students.
