Dan Pierce has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2004, serving Ward 5 (Highland Park, Highwood). He has been President of the District since 2014 and also held that office from 2006 to 2008 and from 2009 to 2012. He was the recipient of the National Association of Cleanwater Agencies Public Service Award and Illinois Association of Wastewater Agencies Public Official Award.

Born in Chicago on March 31, 1928, his family moved to the North Shore and Dan graduated from New Trier High School. He earned degrees from Harvard College and Harvard Law School. During the Korean War, Dan served in the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corp and attended the United States Air Force Command & Staff School. When he returned home, he worked at several law firms for the remainder of his legal career.

He served in the Illinois State Legislature from 1965 – 1985 where he worked diligently to ensure a safe environment for future generations. During that time, he was Chairman of the House Environment Committee. He was instrumental in the passage of the Pollution Control Act in 1969, a year before the Federal Government acted.

Dan was elected Mayor of Highland Park in 1987 and served for three terms. He was active on the American Legion Board, the Healthcare Foundation of Highland Park Board, and the Rotary Club of Highland Park/Highwood.

He was a mentor, friend, and colleague to all who came to know him. He leaves behind a legacy of community and public service accomplishments and will be truly missed. NSWRD flags will be flown at half-staff in memory of District President Daniel M. Pierce and were lowered through Friday, February 21st . A public memorial service in celebration of Dan’s life will be held in May.
