‘Come down hard on illegal loggers’
SIPITANG: The seizure of 1,700 logs found in Long Mio recently indicates there are still irresponsible parties involved in illegal logging activities.

State Education and Innovation Minister cum Sindumin Assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob said those granted logging licences should comply with the rules.

“Any person who has been granted a logging licence must carry out logging activities in the designated area and in accordance with the rules set by the Sabah Forestry Department.

“Logging and cleaning activities are essential for certain projects such as agriculture or livestock projects but must be done in a proper manner to maintain environmental sustainability.

“If there are parties who violate the logging regulations, misuse the facilities, engage in theft and invasion and deforestation, strict action should be taken, he said  after the ground breaking of the Sabah Lundayeh Cultural Association (PKLS) Longhouse  Building Extension held at the PLKS Complex.

He also encouraged all cultural associations in Sabah to produce tourism and ethnic cultural products to boost the economy.

“Other than PKLS, I encourage all cultural associations in Sabah to develop their own associations by producing tourism products and tribal culture to enhance the economy while promoting the culture and their district.

“At the same time, I want all these associations to think of ways to develop their local socio-cultural and economic areas in particular,” he said.
