Bruno Chatelin interviewed in Izvestia on Golden Globes

I have been interviewed by Elena Palmer about the Golden Globes for the famous Russian publication "Izvestia"
Thanks to Nicole Muj and Gotham Chandna.
My contributions are quoted in this first publication, second to come with more comments from me...

...- I'm not thrilled with the films around which there are so many hype. I did not like either the Irishman, or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, or Marriage Story, admitted Bruno Chatelin, founder of the largest film festival platform Filmfestival.com...

A bit of history first since I am quite sure the name is familiar but thye story less known:

1917–1991

Old Izvestia logo. It uses two letters that are no longer used in the Russian language

During the Soviet period, while Pravda served as the official mouthpiece of the Communist PartyIzvestia expressed the official views of the Soviet government as published by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.[3] The full name was Izvestiya Sovetov Narodnykh Deputatov SSSR (in Russian, Известия Советов народных депутатов СССР, the Reports of Soviets of Peoples' Deputies of the USSR).

1992–present

Following the dissolution of the Soviet UnionIzvestia now describes itself as a "national" newspaper of Russia. The newspaper was owned by a vast holding company of Vladimir Potanin which had close ties with the government.  A controlling stake in Izvestia was purchased by state-owned Gazprom on 3 June 2005, and included in the Gazprom Media holding. According to the allegations of the Committee to Protect Journalists, Raf Shakirov, editor-in-chief of Izvestia, was forced to resign because the government officials did not like the paper's coverage of the Beslan school hostage crisis.  Other sources informed that Potanin had asked him to leave for fear the Kremlin would be riled by the explicit photographs of the massacre published by Izvestia. As of 2005, the circulation of Izvestia was 240,967. Its 2007 circulation certified by TNS Gallup Media was 371,000 copies.  Until his death on 1 October 2008, the chief artist was Boris Yefimov, the centenarian illustrator who had worked as Joseph Stalin's political cartoonist.

In 2008, Gazprom Media sold Izvestia to National Media Group. The newspaper was relaunched in D2 (broadsheet) format after that and adopted a new slogan ("Making Izvestia [i.e., reports] from the news"), as well as extended simultaneously its business coverage. The paper's old business section, Finansovye Izvestia (Finance Izvestia), was closed, and Marker Weekly was launched instead in September 2011, distributed with Izvestia on Mondays. The Friday appendix Nedelya (The Week), devoted to culture and leisure activities, was relaunched as well.

FILM AWARD FILM HOLLYWOOD FILM JOKER JOAKIN PHOENIX

The Joker fought with the Irishman, Joaquin Phoenix complained that he was not allowed on the plane, and Laura Dern apologized for the selfishness of Hollywood residents. All these are the events of the main pre-Oscar show - the Golden Globe Awards. Guests of the ceremony were given a rare opportunity to see in one room the largest gathering of international movie stars: Leonardo di Caprio, Brad Pitt, Robert de Niro, Al Pacino, Tom Hanks, Antonio Banderas, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie and Meryl Streep. But the focus was on the directors of the three major movie hits of the year: Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino and Todd Phillips. Izvestia shares details from the scene.

Shadows of Scorsese

The card came: "Joker" conquered the Russian hire

Also in the top three are family animation and drama with Brad Pitt

From the day the nominations were announced, the battle between the creators of Irish, Once Upon a Time in ... Hollywood and the Joker were one of the main contenders. But Tarantino was more fortunate, since his film was nominated in the category "Best Full-length Comedy or Musical" - and there were no competitors here. On the contrary, Scorsese and Phillips had to stand in the ring against each other in the category “Best Drama Feature Film”.

Of course, for more than half a century of the existence of the prize, the American Foreign Press Association has learned to cope with such problems, diplomatically handing out "all sisters by earrings." But what happened as a result surprised even experienced ones: the military drama “1917” was named the best dramatic full-length film of the year, and Sam Mendes, who wrote and directed it, received the title of best director, bypassing all three giants.

In principle, the motive that motivated the voters is understandable - the Irishman and the Joker are equally loved by the audience. And to recognize Scorsese as "the best director" is like saying "the water is wet." “All of us, in one way or another, are just the pale shadows of Martin,” Mendes said in his thanks, and was right.

The second intrigue bothered mainly TV series lovers: the first season of the Morning Show, released at the end of 2019, made the public a difficult choice: which of the two leading actresses deserves the title of the best - Jennifer Aniston or Reese Witherspoon. But here, the outcome of the battle turned all expectations upside down: Golden Globe was diplomatically given to Olivia Coleman for his role in the series Crown.

And finally, the third intrigue is the confrontation between the favorites of the public Al Pacino, Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt in the category "Best Supporting Actor in a Feature Film". The question was resolved to everyone's satisfaction: Anthony Hopkins did not come to Los Angeles, Tom Hanks was awarded the prestigious Cecil Demille Prize, and the idol of women, Brad Pitt went onstage behind the golden statuette.

A little disappointing for Al Pacino - but it turned out that the actor who had specially flown from New York was not upset at all.

Comic in life: the new "Joker" - between raptures and scandals

How Batman's sworn enemy can change Hollywood

- I am too old to receive the title of best actor, and too young to be awarded the prize for life achievements. So everything is in order, and just glad to be here with my colleagues and friends, ”said the actor to Izvestia after the ceremony.

There were no more surprises. The organizers did not fail the expectations of the audience, supporting Joaquin Phoenix: the actor deservedly received a figurine for playing the role of the Joker in the film of the same name. However, the solemnity of the moment did not affect the behavior of the actor.

In his gratitude, the ironic and unpredictable Phoenix remained true to himself, generously used obscene language and poked fun at his colleagues. In particular, looking reproachfully into the hall in the direction of colleagues sitting at the tables, he said that it would not hurt someone to invite him to a private jet when he flies back to Palm Springs.

The fact is that starting from January 2, this important California town hosts an important event for world cinema - Palm Springs International Film Festival. Not very well-known to the general public, this festival gathers the entire Hollywood elite every year, and often this is where the fate of foreign applicants for the Oscars is decided.

Lie beautifully: Elton John's songs ousted his personal life from the film

Rocketman’s copyright holders didn’t object to the cuts in the picture, distributors say

By tradition, those who do not participate in the Golden Globes travel to Palm Springs. But sometimes there are coincidences - you have to keep up with both there and there. For stars who own aircraft, this is not a problem. For the rest, driving 200 km one way and the next day back can be tiring. As the guests of the ceremony told Izvestia, the performer of the role of the Joker was just one of these poor fellows: one of the colleagues refused to give Phoenix a ride on his jet and he had to get there by car.

Hollywood scam

Taron Edgerton, who played the role of Elton John in the movie "Rocketman," was recognized as the best actor in a full-length comedy or musical film. Elton John's biopic also expectedly received the award for the best song I’m Gonna Love Me Again. Alas, none of the six Russian films applying for an award in the category “Best Foreign Language Film” was awarded as a result; the award went to the Cannes winner “Parasites” by Korean director Bong Joon Ho. The victory of Chernobyl in the nomination “Best Short Drama Series” was just as obvious.

Half the kingdom for a hero: can the Witcher save Netflix hegemony

In the fierce competition in the video streaming market, producers of only the best series can survive

Among other interesting points, it is worth noting the success of Netflix's film “Marriage Story”. Beautifully made, with excellent acting (Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver), this film won the hearts of the inhabitants of Hollywood. It remained incomprehensible to the general public in the rest of the world why suddenly a quite ordinary family drama was on the list of applicants for the title of the best dramatic film of the year along with Irish and Joker. And although she did not get the victory in the main nomination, just as Scarlett Johansson did not receive the title of best actress, losing it to Renee Zellweger, one of the six possible figurines was still awarded the picture. For the role of Nora's lawyer, Laura Dern was noted.

The secret of the great success of “Marriage Story” is that almost all the major movie stars live in Los Angeles and having gone through the divorce procedures, the plot and characters of the film are painfully familiar. All of them were bred in the same courthouse in Downtown, all of them experienced storms of negative emotions about the division of houses in the most expensive areas of the city, all were forced to fight for their right to see their children, many of them were unfairly accused of substance abuse. , in mental imbalance and other sins.

Party with the Joker: the main cultural impressions of the outgoing year

The best performances, concerts, exhibitions, films and books according to Izvestia

- Hollywood is not only a factory for the production of high-quality film products for the whole world, but also a small town where people live, eat, sleep, get sick, take their children to schools, go to parent meetings, get married and get divorced. I hope the audience will forgive us that our simple daily life turned out to be more important for us in this case than the fate of world cinema, ”Laura Dern joked in a conversation with Izvestia.

Ticktokers and YouTube

Interviewed by Izvestia, the guests of the Golden Globe disagreed on the main films of the year, but were unanimous that the distribution of prizes and the ceremony itself were very successful this year.

- I'm not thrilled with the films around which there are so many hype. I did not like either the Irishman, or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, or Marriage Story, admitted Bruno Chatelin, founder of the largest film festival platform Filmfestival.com.

“There is nothing shameful in words: I like violence in the movies”

Director Quentin Tarantino - about the cruelty of Japanese films, bald spots of aging stars and the universe in which I would like to live

Other preferences are with the editor-in-chief of the American branch of the authoritative Screen Daily magazine Jeremy Kaya.

“My favorites were 1917, Scandal (the new tape by Jay Roach with Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman. - Izvestia) and Parasites,” he said.

At the same time, all experts acknowledge that premiums need updating.

- In general, I am pleased with the ceremony. It seems to me, however, that the Golden Globe should significantly increase the number of categories. For example, super-short talented, vivid and unexpected films on the TicToc social platform could significantly decorate the list of participants. On YouTube, you can also find masterpieces of independent filmmakers from around the world. So I am for the introduction of the category “Short film from social media”, - shared with Izvestia Larry Neimer, winner of the Emmy Awards and the National Cable TV Association, co-founder of E! Entertainment Television.

And Jeremy Kai offers to attract ordinary viewers and creators of successful YouTube videos to the vote.
