Statement by Hon. Peter O’Neill, CMG, MP Member for Ialibu-Pangia While there are a number of alarming details that must be discussed in the coming week, such as a deficit of more than four Billion Kina that will be most likely paid by China, one of the saddest decisions of this Marape government is to reimpose school fees on our children. This budget will do more harm to our children than we could possibly have imagined in our worst dreams. The removal the free school policy is a disgrace and will see one million children turned away from schools next year. What is going on in the mind of Marape that he would end this funding of our children’s education, a policy that he was even a part and parcel in the development and implementation. In eight years of Government we opened the doors of our schools to more than one million additional students to go to school, most of them girls. who never before had a chance of an education. We all agree that the TFF program had its challenges, and these were being fixed and education programs were getting better. No policy of any government in any country is ever perfect from the start, but you work hard to make it better and deliver for the people. Now James Marape has told a million children and their families to go away and forget any dream of an education. James Marape has sent a very clear message to the parents of every child in our country, particularly the parents who do not have much money, and particularly to the parents of girls, that he does not care about them. Instead of educating our children, James Marape is telling them that they can aspire to nothing under his leadership of the government of this nation. If James Marape does not reverse this decision to kick one million children out of schools our parents in every town and village must make their voices heard. Comments are closed.
