The Education and Innovation Ministry has always been working closely with the Federal Education Ministry, said its Minister Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob.

“In terms of power devolution, we had yet to receive it in full but there has been progress on this matter,” he said during question and answer session, at the State Legislative Assembly sitting.

“The Education Ministry has given powers to Sabah to oversee the repair and development of dilapidated schools and on innovation, we too, collaborate with the Federal Government.”

He was replying to a supplementary question by Tambunan Assemblyman Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

Earlier, to an initial question by Jeffrey, Yusof said that even though the learning syllabus is under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, his ministry had taken several innovative measures to complement formal learning in Sabah.

Among the initiatives, he said, were the entrepreneurship development programme through technological innovation, Stem (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) knowledge and skill enhancement, and Sabah Education Innovation Excellence (Kips) programme.

Another programme was the Technovasion programme where it was held in five districts every year.

“Each programme would be held in selected schools and joined by between five and eight students who will be exposed to digital storytelling, stop motion animation, and creativity and innovation unearthing activities.

“And the products of the programme will be used to participate in the Sabah Screen Fest which features short films and animations,” he said.

Aside from that, the Education and Innovation Ministry has initiated the Tourism School Programme in three schools – SK Moyog Penampang, SK Mandalipun Papar, and SK Meligan Sipitang.

“The programme exposed students to innovation in the tourism industry with an emphasis on Community-Based Tourism.”

Yusof also said that he hoped to see incubations centres being set up in each higher learning institutions in the State.

“In these centres, students can interact and develop their ideas,” he said.
