Longtime State Rep. From Montco, Robert Godshall, Dies At 86

A longtime Republican state representative and local leader, Robert Godshall, has died at age 86.

FRANCONIA, PA — A longtime Montgomery County leader and local state legislator has passed away.

Robert Godshall, a Republican who held the 53rd district seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for 36 years, was 86.

"This is a tremendous loss and we express our condolences and prayers to his family and community," the Montgomery County Republican Committee said in a statement on Sunday.

A graduate of Souderton High School, Juniata College, and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, Godshall also previously served as Montgomery County Controller.

In the House, Godshall was the chairman of the House Consumer Affairs Committee for 11 years.

Locally, he served on the Souderton School Board for 17 years.

Democratic State Rep. Steve Malagari, who took over Godshall's seat following the 2018 election, praised the veteran legislator's leadership and professionalism.

"Not only did he serve the 53rd district with tenacity and grace over several decades, he was a kind source of knowledge and guidance for me personally," Malagari said. "I share my condolences and prayers for his family and friends at this difficult time."

The 53rd district encompasses Lansdale, Hatfield, Franconia, Souderton, the Montgomery County portion of Telford, and Salford.
