Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez indicated that he's open to the idea of remaining in the light heavyweight division to pursue more world titles.

Canelo made his light heavyweight debut on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, when he knocked out longtime division figure Sergey Kovalev to capture the WBO world title.

It was tactical fight for most of the contest - until Canelo closed the show with a combination that knocked Kovalev out in the eleventh round.

Kovalev was coming off an 11th-round knockout of mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde in August. He was nearly derailed in the eight round of that bout, but came back to stop Yarde in the eleventh.

Canelo now holds world titles at middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight.

He planned to drop back down in weight, but he would also entertain another big fight at 175.

During the week of the fight, Canelo and his handlers made it clear that they were open to the idea of a future fight with WBC, IBF champion Artur Beterbiev - who many view as the division leader.

“[After this] the plan was to go down to 160, 168, but why not – maybe 175 again," Canelo said.

“We have to see what happens. We have to do what’s best for us. We have to look for the best fights, the big fights, but obviously give the victories to Mexico.”
