Officials identify toddler killed in hit-and-run case on Indianapolis west side

Detectives are still searching for clues about the driver who struck and killed a toddler playing in front of a west-side home on Sunday.

Giselle Hernandez, 1, died after the vehicle struck her in a driveway in the 1700 block of North Exeter Avenue shortly before 6:30 p.m. Sunday, officials said.

The Marion County coroner's office released the child's name Tuesday and ruled her death an accident. Police on Sunday told media the child was 21 months old.

Family members were rushing the injured girl to the hospital when they flagged down an officer in the 1100 block of Tibbs Avenue, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.  

Police said an ambulance rushed the child to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, where she later died.

The driver left the scene. Police did not locate a suspect on Sunday, according to officials.

Investigators on Tuesday declined IndyStar's request for an interview. Police have not released information about a suspect or vehicle.

The case remained under investigation.
