“We haven’t left Jake’s side and we won’t,” Gootkin said.

Bozeman, Belgrade, Livingston and Billings police departments escorted the deputy’s body, according to the news release. Broadwater, Carbon, Lewis and Clark, Park, Sweet Grass and Yellowstone Counties’ sheriff’s offices also joined in the escort. The U.S. Forest Service, Bozeman Fire Department and American Medical Response were also there.

At about 6:50 p.m. Saturday, Allmendinger and deputy Ryan Jern responded to a report of a stranded man on Fairy Lake Road, Gootkin said. Nearly an hour later, Jern called for help and the Bridger Canyon Rural Fire Department got to the scene at about 8 p.m.

Gootkin said Allmedinger’s patrol car started sliding backwards on an icy road when Allmendinger exited the driver’s side of it. Gootkin said the car then went on top of him.

Gootkin said Jern turned to get ready for impact and didn’t see Allmendinger get out of the car. When he turned back around, he said, Jern saw that Allmendinger was gone.

Jern got out of the car and found Allmendinger under it. He tried to save Allmendinger but could not.

Sheriff Gootkin said at a Sunday press conference that Allmendinger was brought back to town at about 11 p.m. After that, he said, search and rescue volunteers were able to rescue the stranded man from Fairy Lake.

The sheriff took the incident as an opportunity to tell people to think about search and rescue volunteers and emergency responders. Gootkin said the weekend storm was predictable and that people going into secluded areas put emergency responders in danger.

“That’s exactly what those two were doing last night. They were going up to help someone,” Gootkin said on Sunday.

Allmendinger’s funeral will be held at the Commons at 1794 Baxter Lane on Friday starting at 10 a.m. There will be a procession through town beforehand.
