Former Papua New Guinea foreign minister Rimbink Pato says the governments’ statement “richest black Christian country” read out at the 74th High Level Session of the United Nations General Assembly is a mistake to say in a larger forum. Mr Marape’s statement to the UN General Assembly was presented by Foreign Aairs and Trade Minister Soroi Eoe in New York last week. Mr Pato said nobody in the international community cared much about a national political statement because what the global community want to hear from PNG is a vision for what the country has on oer and what it contributes globally, and PNG’s views on key issues that concern the world.” Pato, who was foreign minister for seven and half years, said the statement should also represent a boost to the country in that it sought to present at this time to the international community some of the key characteristics that were great selling points of PNG. “The statement ‘richest black Christian country’ is something that could go down well in some small segments of the PNG population but it is a mistake to say that in a larger forum such as the UN. It is like Indonesia saying it is the richest brown Muslim nation. Another point is that the statement makes big promises which are impossible to deliver.
“There’s reference to climate change and gender equality which appears to be only main contributions but no mention of PNGs leadership role in the Pacic, the blue ocean continent and challenges concerning it, the conicts between China and Western countries in the Pacic region etc,” he said.
