THE CENTENARY of Victory Garden Allotments is being marked with a Heritage Open Day event this weekend.
The allotments were donated to the people of Rawdon in September 1919 to commemorate the victory of the First World War.
Now the general public are being invited in from1pm to 4pm on Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22.
The open weekend will feature escorted tours, information boards on the history of the site and stories from the past.
There will also be tea, coffee, soft drinks, cakes, surplus plants, vegetables and fruit for sale. Proceeds will go to the allotments association funds.
The site now has 72 plots ranging from 300 square yards to 62.5 square yards. It also has new communal buildings. Social events are organised at the site and many plots are worked by young families.
