Community sports roundup: WWU men’s hoops signs area player

Erwin Weary Jr. is making the step up.

Weary, a graduate of Cedar Park Christian-Mountlake Terrace High School, has joined the Western Washington University men’s basketball program, the school announced Monday.

Weary, a 6-foot-5 guard, spent last season at Edmonds Community College, where he averaged 9.7 points per game. At CPC-Mountlake Terrace he was named the 2018 Class 1B boys basketball state player of the year by the Associated Press, averaging 25.6 points, 10.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game while leading the Lions to the state quarterfinals.

“He is a hard worker and has great offensive instincts to go with his long, athletic frame that creates good, solid defense,” Western coach Tony Dominguez said in a press release. “Erwin also possesses tremendous potential to play multiple positions, and this versatility combined with his excitement for WWU makes him an attractive addition to our program.”

Weary will have sophomore eligibility for the Vikings. He joins Tritons teammate Sean Kirk, a 6-foot-3 guard who’s a graduate of Mountlake Terrace High School, as a member of Western’s recruiting class for the upcoming season.

Kamiak honored by Special Olympics

Kamiak High School was named a National Banner School by Special Olympics North America, the school was informed last Wednesday.

The National Banner program recognizes schools that demonstrate a commitment to inclusion. Kamiak, under the direction of Georgia McClaskey, was able to meet the program’s 10 national standards of excellence, which include participation in unified sports (where Special Olympians are teamed with athletes without intellectual disabilities), as well as engaging and raising awareness throughout the school.

Kamiak will receive a banner that will be hung in the gym during a presentation at a future date.

Kamiak is now one of 394 schools nationwide from elementary through college that have received National Banner status. Five other high schools in Washington also received National Banner status in 2019, those being Fife, Lakeside, North Thurston, Puyallup and Timberline.

Lake Stevens grad earns NWAC award

Lake Stevens High School graduate Payton Ludwig, now a sophomore on the Edmonds Community College volleyball team, was named the Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for Aug. 26-Sept. 1.

Ludwig recorded 40 digs during eight sets played as Edmonds swept four matches during the week, winning all four 3-0. She also had a 93% serve efficiency and a 2.27 serve-receive average.

Ludwig has helped the Tritons, who earned their first trophy in a decade when they placed fourth at last year’s NWAC Volleyball Championship Tournament, start the season 12-7.

Jackson grad wins goalkeeping honors

Jackson High School graduate Kayleigh Sedlacek, now a sophomore on the Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s soccer team, was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for Sept. 2-8. Sedlacek made nine saves in a scoreless tie against Nebraska-Kearney on Friday.
