Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - 2019 Preseason Game 2

The weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.. Huh? What? Oh, sorry. I'm awake now.

The Game: This is saying a lot, but I don't know that I've seen more of a snoozer of a preseason game. Usually I find things to keep me interested, like the competition to see which backup quarterback stinks more. But even that bored the hell out of me. I'm one of those fans that is proud to say I will always hang in until the last play of every game, but towards the end of the third quarter, that streak was in serious jeopardy. Somehow I found a second wind and hung in there, but I really don't know why.

Defensive Backfield: The starting secondary is the most improved part of this team. You might argue it's the outside linebackers, but I believe the safety additions and the young defensive backs will be the strength of this defense.

Tim Boyle: Sorry Andy Herman, sorry Dash Riprock (who tried to come back under a new name but was kicked out again), Sorry Tim Boyle fans, the party is over. He is not what you thought he was. The inconsistency is maddening. He is repeating the pattern of showing something positive in one game and then reverting back to what he is in the following games - a less than adequate backup quarterback.

DeShone Kizer: (See Tm Boyle)

Rashan Gary: Can we all just slow down a bit and remember he's learning a position that he has hardly played? From what I've seen of his so far, he hasn't shown a lot of awareness of what's is going on during the play, which can certainly be attributed to inexperience. Pettine also said they are throwing a lot of things at him to expose him to it all, but come the regular season, they will whittle down what he will actually be asked to do. So all you "BUST after two preseason games" folks, just shut your mouths for now and let's see where this goes. I wasn't the biggest fan of the pick myself, but I'm more than willing and happy to be proven dead wrong in a year or two (not after two preseason games).

Jake Kumerow: It was my belief that before he injured himself on that dumb TD celebration, he was not only making the team last season, but would have been a solid contributor. So I think you know how I feel now about Touchdown Jesus (or First Down Jesus - your choice). What I got last season was just a gut feeling that he and Rodgers were developing a trust relationship. That Kumerow would become that guy that Rodgers can always depend on to be in the right spot when Rodgers needs it most. Like Jordy Nelson always appearing at the pylon when Rodgers is scrambling in the Red Zone or always finding the first down marker on 3rd or 4th downs. Rodgers to Kumerow will prove to be an important part of the Packers offense in 2019 and beyond.

Lane Taylor/Cole Madison/Elgton Jenkins: My way too early assessment: Taylor is better as a run blocker, Madison is better as a pass blocker and Jenkins is more balanced in those two departments. My feel is Jenkins' best position would be center.

Billy Turner: He's likely not making the Pro Bowl, but he's a significant upgrade from anyone they had at the position in 2018. He moves really well, plays smart and doesn't give up on blocks. Money well spent.

Dean Lowery: Dean had a rough day against the Raven's offensive line, especially against the run. He was regularly swallowed up in the trenches and ended up with nothing but goose eggs in the stat department.

Matt LaFleur: Let's hope the offense has been so vanilla by design, and he's saving the innovations for the Bears.

I HAD to give Al "Thumbs Up" just for his comment about Gary. I mean my God folks, Al is dead on right, it's been TWO preseason games. The things that were said by some of the fans here about Gary since Thursday night surprised me a bit. To quote Allen Iverson with a twist..

"But we're talking about preseason man. What are we talking about? Preseason? We're talking about the preseason man?"

It's right to pump the breaks on the 'bust train' for Gary, but I can't help noticing the same production pattern he had at Michigan. Playing significant snaps, many against second string and stat line reads... nothing!

If Petine & MLF are “pleased where he is” who the heck are we to think we know better?! The guy is being asked to play a new position as a stand up OLB! Give the young man some time. As MLF, Gary will be dialed in and deployed per his developmental skill set as the regular season games get closer. There are way too many butts in the worry chair folks. Have faith & chill out!! Go Pack!!

So I'll say this much, and try to remind people of a simple fact. IT WAS A 12 HOLE PICK! It wasn't the 32nd pick in the first round, it was the 12th overall selection. What bothers fans wasn't the astoundingly vanilla ineffective way he played against the 1's, it was that there was nothing against guys who won't be in the NFL in 2 weeks, when he played in the 3rd and 4th quarters!

If you spend a 12 hole overall pick on a guy, and he doesn't get a sniff of the QB against 3rd deep tier players, pardon the realists in the audience for being concerned. Fans, as well as his teammates know how important it is to lock down a starting caliber guy with a 12th overall selection. That guy simply needs to be on the field and be a starting caliber difference maker. I think thats where a lot of concern is coming from.

I was actually encouraged by his NFL opener, and then thinking, last Thursday, Oh no, what have done "again". I love the idea of the athleticism which is truly undeniable! Also, he projected to be a 4-3 DE, and was known as a development player at 3-4 five technique DE/OLB. He's going to take time to develop. I haven't called him a bust. As a fan who knows what he's looking at, this dude looks very Von Miller like to me in Athleticism, yet couldn't record a sack or even "affect" the QB against some very weak 4th qtr competition.

That said, the entire team looked terrible, so.. I'm willing to continue to watch his growth. Was a terrible outing for Gary, as well as the Packers organization. Raised a lot of flags.

He was not neccesarily losing 1 on 1s consistently though which seems be people's gripe with Gary. He was being chipped by the TE as well, sometimes the HB. Sometimes he rushed with no plan an no move, so this where he needs development.

Did anyone think this guy was out-of-the-box ready, after reading all the draft reports on him. Heck, I was expecting to see more from Sternberger than from Gary early on (neither have flashed much yet).

If Gary is still running around without any apparent plan well into his second year, THEN we might start some legitimate worrying.

I appreciate your observations and comments but if the coaches don’t agree with this, then you may be a bit too critical. MLF & Petine are both on video saying that Gary has done some impactful things but he’s a rookie! I realize you want to see Khalil Mack on every down but how realistic is that. I say give it some time. Gary is only going to get stronger and better IMO. Patience grasshopper;)

" it was that there was nothing against guys who won't be in the NFL in 2 weeks, when he played in the 3rd and 4th quarters!"

Yep, he was also loafing again on backside pursuit. This week it got detailed in the Packersnews Extra Points section by Eric Baranczyk and Pete Dougherty Aug 18.

Am I calling him a bust? No, absolutely not. But this was beginning to exact scenario I feared when Goodell called his name. I truely hope it changes. I watch the game rooting for him to make a play. So far I see a lot of athletic ability that doesn't translate into football production.

I agree. Everyone has to remember that the Packers are playing in pre-season schemes here. These schemes are designed to show the opponents nothing that they can gameplan for in the regular season.

Let’s wait until the games count before we start passing judgement on the players, coaches and team.

Oh, and good to hear Dash is banned again. It’s nice to have reasonable input whether I agree with it or not.

The Ravens don’t like to lose preseason games. The Packers are doing both install and tryouts with many new players and coaches. The Ravens simply played better and with more intensity. I remain in the wait and see group of fans.

I thought I was the only one who fell asleep in the first quarter. My Lord even the 1s were pretty brutal. The running game was horrible. I want to put "horrible" in all caps it was so bad. And it seemed like it was just a want to problem with the line. If they do nothing in Winnipeg but trot A-A-ron out for a quarter and have him hand the ball off I'd be fine with that move. This is supposed to be an offense predicated on play action. They have got to be able to run the ball consistently enough and at a respectable enough level to make defenses think run first. That idea is laughable right now.

Please keep in mind...

This is still the Mike McCarthy-James Campen O-Line group playing here.

These guys are learning new techniques and also being asked to play with a different mind-set (hopefully).

The OL sets the tone of the team regarding physicality. I mean for the entire team, not just the offense.

MM was soft as the Sta-Puff Marshmallow man and Campen was a very smart technician, he never coached aggression.

IMO Aggression by the OL with some Nasty on top is exactly what this GBP team needs. That alone would be worth 3 more wins this year and beyond.

Buckets Goldenberg or Jug Earp wouldn't get pushed around without displaying some fight.

This “nasty” is what the OL needs, and they will develop that as the season progresses. We will see far more run blocking this year, and it’s exactly what the Packers need.

They will only get better. This will also help AR stay healthy.

1s don’t need to risk injury in preseason. We will see better play from the O. I have zero worries. But, the OL needs to haul off and wear opposing front 7s down. Keep them playing “honest” for the first time in many years.

Agreed MM. I am looking forward to seeing how the running game looks once A. Jones and J. Williams get their opportunities. I actually thought the first team OLine performed well when they tried to run the ball.

From what I have seen so far, D. Williams sticks due to his draft status and potential. None of the other RBs will make the roster. It's tough to evaluate the running game without NFL caliber backs toting the rock.

>>>>Dash Riprock tried to come back<<<
That is funny. He was addicted to himself.

What worried me most about the preseason scrimmage in Baltimore was Baltimore's receivers running around picking up catches around the 5-10 yard line. I've watched that for many years, and am so envious as to how GB doesn't find those plays for its offense; its receivers can't get the separation, or the schemes aren't designed well.
Is it just my frustration negative bias? Do other teams complete more short passes than GB receivers? Seems like it to me.
Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the short completion necessitates a well timed concept, more than a deep pass. Given enough protection, the deep pass is going to unfold. The short pass has to be well timed and schemed.
Seems GB just doesn't do the short timed passes very well anymore. But....just might be my frustration bias.

After watching the game a scecond time without a 6 pack and a bunch of guys I saw things differently.

1. Gary didn’t do anything great but also held the edge and seemed to play smart. They will scheme him to his strengths when it counts.
2. There was quite a bit more quick timed passes and they are trying more screens. Kumerow will get a lot of PT.
3. Pass blocking great, run blocking not so much.
4. Scott is looking awesome punting so far.
5. Bolton is showing starter qualities.
6. They might have to keep 7 WR.
7. Adams looks like a different player, the light has shined on him.
8. MUST get better at tackling.
9. Keke might be top 20 steal of draft.
10. Graham?????
11. Trade Jones for a solid vet for a position of need. ILB?
12. Prediction...We will get many more turnovers this year.

Anyways, after watching sober things looked better, not great but better.

Agree with you on many levels...

1. Gary needs to start by taking care of business: he needs to be sound to get on the field. Impact plays will come with time.

3. There's no reason for a defense to respect Kizer or Boyle. In a sense, #12 on the field will be a tremendous asset to the run game. Aaron Jones would help, too.

5. Bolton's made this team. Whether it's because he's good enough to make plays on Sundays or because there's nobody else who can remains to be seen.

7. They need Adams to play well. I'm glad he's starting to look the part...I'd like for him to do it more without ending up on the ground.

10. Starting to wonder how much of a problem Graham's knee really is. It's dogged him since he blew it out with Seattle a couple years ago. Still, he's someone who likely doesn't need many PS snaps to be ready to go.

Some thoughts/opinions on your points.

Run Blocking- It seemed to me ran a lot of stretch outside runs, and RB never cut it up the field. not sure if our RB didn't show well, or was it run blocking?

7 WR - This would surprise me, unless a couple deemed core ST starters, as I think a couple spots on roster are ST spots, where position is not really relevant, but rather player is there for ST. Plus, potential WRs are dime a dozen, no team is really lacking developmental players at this position.

Keke - Agree

Trading Jones: I just don't see J. Jones on the roster to start season, weird vide around him. Not sure he has trade value.

Turnovers: If Jaire and Crawford hang onto their pick opportunities, I think people would be looking at this game differently. Is Baltimore happy about their passing game? I can't imagine. I could see our defense kind of a feast or famine based on turnovers.

Bolton is your nickel LB. He is not a run defender unless Pettine is going to go blitz the QB and watch for the run on the way with Clark and Montravious protecting him. I like him and he should have gone no later than the fourth round. They will have to bring in a thumper for early downs, Crawford is more suited for outside rush.

murf7777, “9. Keke might be top 20 steal of draft.”

I don’t believe Keke has lined up against opponent’s #1s but I too am excited about his potential. At some point in this season I expect to see Za’Darius, Clark, Gary, and Keke rushing the passer on an obvious passing down. Being able to get pressure with four would be a huge advantage with the Packers upgraded D backfield.

"Do other teams complete more short passes than GB receivers? Seems like it to me."

This is in part why completion percentages have increased over recent years. QBs taking what they're being given. More WR screens and quick-hitters.

Dobber couldn’t agree more about the higher QB percentages. Certainly it isn’t because QB’s have suddenly become more accurate. Mlf offense is designed to do just that and if Arod mostly follows his direction I can see him at 70% rate this year. Especially if they keep Allison and Kumerow. 2 guys who just get open and catch the ball.

After I found out AR wasn't suiting up, my interest went right out the window. I was hoping to see the real starting offense for a series or two. Wow Al, polluted or not, this is perhaps the first post anywhere this off and preseason with which I entirely agree!

Your comments on the QBs showing good then bad: isn’t that the definition of a player with potential but not yet able to achieve it sustainably?

I agree on the Madison/Jenkins/Taylor point. I hope that what we are seeing is akin to what LaFleur indicated with Gary: using the preseason to teach for the future and define the strengths and weaknesses outside of the optimal positions.

As far as the Offense goes, we would really need to see A Jones and J Williams and Vitale to see how the RBs factor. D Jones catching yips pretty much undermine the stated design. He could have got his QB killed on one whiff last Thursday as well. If he continues at this rate I see PS as the likely landing spot.

Want to see if Hill or Ford offer more and if the new FB can do more Vitale like things with a week of practice if Vitale remains out. Without that big elements of the stated O necessarily missing.

A year ago, I remained skeptical of Kumerow. At some point, however, repeated achievement against genuine players finally rebuts stats or the past. He has done it against all comers. He should be on the roster and he should get snaps.

That does not mean all camp stars should be anointed as genuine finds. Lazard looks great, but he hasn’t done what Kumerow does as consistently or against true starters to convince me yet.

Conversely, there is something about Shepherd and his field awareness that makes me think he is genuine even though the same applies. I just don’t see Davis reading the play and getting into position to make those catches.

My confession is I never really believed the Kumerow hype since last year. He seems to have turned into one hell of a solid player. Never saw that coming at all, I basically thought he was a practice hero or my nickname "Practice Jesus." We are seeing him win routes against starting corners. I still do not see a ton of future growth, I think he is a solid possession receiver and this is still his ceiling but I was wrong about him.

Everything is obvious. But the mental problems are still coming. Gute tried to solve the back up QB problem by trading Randll. He hasn't! Gute went against everything I've seen with Gary. Switching him to OLB. was not putting this defense FIRST! Lowrey is a failure at LDE. In college he played on the Right side. I keep on wondering if we shouldn't just go back to the 4-3-4 to solve the problems. And add ILB to that. Turner is such a plus on the OL. I hope they don't move him to RT and screw up the OL. I Believe the starters will be fine. Back-ups? Try again Gute. Kumerow can replace Allison. But Rodgers still needs the explosion, of a Nelson ,Cobb and Finley in their prime..

This whole “vanilla” thing is used too often as an excuse. BOTH teams played vanilla and the Packers clearly were the weaker and softer team. Yes, we didn’t have a couple of our top guys out there, but it’s been proven that these top guys have not been able to carry a winning season the last 2 years. It has to be done with the offense and defense and right now, we will be in trouble again if this tackling thing is not addressed.

Coldworld, you are dead on about Mobile QBs being vanilla killers, the angles they can exploit and take advantage of are non existent in the regular season. You saw this a few years ago from Hundley in the preseason when he had a passer rating over 150, sounds like he is tearing it up in preseason again with Arizona.

Well then we must really suck because we have 2 qbs that are semi mobile and they haven’t done anything against other vanilla defenses.

Our QBs are athletic, but they aren’t true mobile QBs in the way that they play. Rodgers of course hasn’t played and it’s been a point of emphasis to convert Kizer away from that. So not really

Lowery wasn't the only Packer defender who had a bad night. Our run defense hasn't been good in either preseason game. Lowery/Adams/Lancaster are going to have to step it up or cutting Daniels is going to come back and bite the Packers.

Al - first thanks for banning Dash and his numerous pseudonyms yet again.

As for the rest of the article your comments are pretty much spot on. This entire season will be a learning experience for Gary. I expect him to be more of a contributor in 2020 than in 2019.

Hopefully we will never need to see our backup QBs in a real game other than in a mop up role.

As I posted yesterday in a different thread, if our defensive starters remain healthy our defense will be fine. The same is true for the offense. Our starting OL is solid, our depth not so much. Thanks, Since ‘61

The main issue with the #2 OL is that you rarely see what would happen in a regular season game: namely, that the #2s enter as a unit meaning that all 5 positions take a step down. When the games start, those backups--if needed--enter singly. How Patrick or McCray looks playing next to Light or de Beer is much different than how he'd look playing next to Linsley or Bakhtiari. You can shade help to a single weak player and prop that guy up...it's hard to do it for 3 or 4.

I cannot honestly find a reason from practice or games that renders de Beer a legitimate number 2.

In a press conference, OC Hackett stated that the offense at this point was deliberately vanilla. As he put it, why let other teams see what they're going to face? So, yeah, the offense is vanilla; as is the defense; as are the "games", where you simply hope that no one gets hurt. But inevitably, someone does.

After the last couple of seasons suggesting Packers fans be patient this season is a tough sell. But it is unrealistic to think a rookie HC (the Packers have never had one make the playoffs in his first season, including Lombardi) installing a brand new offense and a defense with more first time starters than returning starters will hit the ground running. My expectation is the Packers will be playing much better football after midseason than on opening night. (I’ve argued before one of the reasons Daniels was released is because Gutekunst realizes this too.)

If you are desperate for reassurance, think back to what Pettine did last year with the “talent” available to him at the time. There’s no question this year’s defense is much more talented. Regarding Gary, Pettine may use him mainly as an inside pass rusher once the season begins. His combination of strength and quickness could be tough for OGs to handle, particularly with Clark and Za’darius on the same DL.

Lombardi didn't inherit a HOF QB to start his legacy with. Starr was at the back of the line, then. I'll give LaFleur just as equal or better chance of winning the Norris and moving on in the playoffs as Nagy.

Watching Kumero run routes is magical. Also he has really good hands. He did drop one pass and no one was more upset than him.

Regarding vanilla play calling, I wonder (hoping?) if we might see something like the opener last year in reverse. Nagy in his first game came out with fresh, new plays. Went right down the field without a problem. It was kind of shocking. Then the new toy (Mack) had a career half, our QB was hurt and we were forced to rally in the second.

I’d love to see MLF do something similar. There is no way Trubisky mounts a similar comeback.

Doug - If you also recall the Bears didn't move the ball with that much success the rest of the night, most of it for sure. The defense made adjustments and actually played very well the rest of the night.

The Bear's first drive was 10 plays for 86 yards and the TD. The second was 9 plays for 60 yards and a FG. The Bears has 8 more possessions for only 148 yards with the Bear offense scoring just a total of 16 points.

I'll take that kind of defense all day long from the Packers.

So, was all his wins during the 1 on 1,s in TC hyperbole? I hope not and don’t think it is smart coaching if not true. New position and who knows with two mobile QB’s may have been told to hold the edge, which by the way mostly he did very well at. Way too early to predict anything IMO.

Point Packer, while it really is waayyy to early to judge the kid, there's one thing I think Packers fans need to be cautious about with Gute at the helm: He is an absolute sucker for players with high SPARQ scores.

The way Ted Thompson valued "Football Players" above and beyond athleticism? Gutekunst is on the exact opposite end of the spectrum. He is apt to gamble on the athletic freak of nature regardless of football acumen.

It's great when one pans out, but during Gute's time at the helm, there will be a number of guys whose measurables will jump off the page, they'll tease amazing possibilities in underwear on the practice field.. and will fail to show up on game day against NFL competition.

- Backup QB: I have arrived at the opinion that they will be no worse off taking a random promising looking QB at final cutdowns. The options are between maybe finding a better QB vs keeping Kizer/Boyle and knowing that neither guy can get the job done but the losses will be closer.

- Gary: He has the athleticism. Packers took a dice roll, which is what all draft picks are. It will take 3 years to figure out what they have. Pronouncing final judgment after 2 preseason games only shows personal ignorance of draft and develop.

- Starting Defense: Looks improved vs pass. Need to greatly improve the run defense. It looked bad.

"Backup QB: I have arrived at the opinion that they will be no worse off taking a random promising looking QB at final cutdowns. "

Then I think they need to identify that promising young QB now, deal for him so you don't need to bid for him (if it's a non-waiver player), and give him a chance to be ready to play when the regular season starts by getting him snaps in the PS.

Agreed. Carrying two developmental QBs like Kizer and Boyle, with one as primary backup QB, is as good as saying they don't plan on winning many games without Rodgers. Perhaps they can't identify any better options right now, and it is what it is. Maybe they don't want to dedicate the salary cap space for a roster position (backup qb) that most likely will not play, and if he does play, then it's most likely season over anyway. Maybe the first two preseason games exposed the weakness more.

I don't think the packers should give up on both of them, since it takes 3 years to develop, and QB is the most complicated position of all. So maybe I am being hasty on both. I don't know. Just glad I don't have to make the decisions, and I only have to comment on how they are doing it wrong when hindsight or hastiness shows it was wrong ;)

I very much doubt that we would be better off and I also doubt that we will go that route. Like it or not, there is little affordable out there that would promise better even once they were up to speed in the system.

Regarding Gary, who I was not wanting us to pick, a position/scheme change in the NFL is significant. I read Khalil Mack didn’t get his first sack until week 10 and I looked up that he only had 4 sacks his first year. The player I wanted, at 12, was Ed Oliver and I see he has no tackles and 1 pd and he didn’t get moved to OLB. Playing in space is so much more difficult that I am willing to be patient and bank on the coaches getting Gary at a point that he contributes and continues to grow.

I’ve watched it four times now.

I still think we trail the Bears and Vikes, but we’ve closed the gap.

The defense....for all the moaning...gave up two TDS. One was a completion on Sullivan that he misplayed and the other was five yard drive after a turnover.

Not worried about Gary at all. On my first job after college I didn’t dominate immediately either; it was more about surviving each day.

The offensive line is better than last year, and it was above average last year. Turner and Jenkins are improvements, Bulaga and Taylor are healthy. This is a good group.

I like our secondary, too. Brown has impressed.

I don’t think our defense is Top Ten, but we should be at least average. If we can win the turnover battle and if Rodgers is healthy and plays well, we should have a chance at a winning season. That’s three IFs.

The angst over these preseason games is misplaced.

I live a...hmmm....7 hour or so drive from Green Bay so I have seen no practices. But based on the reports the Packers are still doing "training camp practices" and not doing "regular season practices". That is they are still installing plays, and comparing players at positions. They have done no scout team preparing for the week's opponent type of stuff. So in that regard they should not be expected to look prepared for the game. At this point you have to only evaluate players not the team.

That said the players still need to freaking tackle better.

Kizer, though not overwhelming, definitely looked better than Boyle this time. I think the Packers keep Kizer because Gute seems determined to wring some value from his trade. Besides, who else is available right now?

Thanks Al for sharing your polluted mind. It’s one of my highlight reads each week. I couldn’t agree with you more on your attitude about the preaseason. This week’s article reminded me of the Super Bowl winning 49ers. It seemed that their preseasons under Coach Walsh were filled with loses, but when the regular seasons came, the 49ers just dominated season after season. I didn’t follow the 49ers preseasons, but they obviously were doing something right during those head scratching loses to prepare for another great year.

In the distant past, in a seemingly long-forgotten era before the advent of free agency, the Packers made a trade for a future HOF linebacker by the name of Ted Hendricks. Sadly, he only played one season for the Green and Gold, but the thing I remember my Father telling me is how soft he was in the pre-season (guy just stands around a lot), and then, how the switch turned on once the season began.

Can I compare a HOF'er to a rookie? No. Can I draw some comparisons? Absolutely.

Do you know what Hendricks did in 1974 with Green Bay?

From Wikipedia:

"five interceptions, seven blocked kicks (3 field goals, 3 punts and 1 extra point) and a safety, two sacks, 75 tackles, and two knocked down passes while again earning consensus All-Pro honors for the second time." Al Davis then proceeded to give us 2 1st-rounders for his contract.

My point is: don't put too much stock in the pre-season. A guy going all-out, and getting injured in a game with no bearing on the regular season does the team, or the player no good.

Have a cold one, enjoy what's left of summer, and we'll see how things go when the rubber meets the road. This is year two of a major re-build. You could argue it is year one, but I think it started last year. That is why I have a more positve outlook on the coming season. These guys are gonna' be good!

Just looking to see the best rise to the top. It’s a process.
