Luton Town 1-2 West Bromwich Albion: Grady Diangana's quickfire double helps Baggies beat Hatters

Grady Diangana, who made his Baggies debut in the Carabao Cup in midweek, only signed from West Ham on deadline day

Substitute Grady Diangana scored twice within six minutes of coming on for his West Bromwich Albion league debut to help beat Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

Promoted Luton looked on course for their first win when Harry Cornick scored after 15 minute with a flying header from right-back Martin Cranie's cross.

But Diangana turned the game by becoming the first Baggies player to score a brace on their league debut since John Hartson against Hull City in August 2006.

After coming on at half-time for Kyle Edwards, Diangana was fed by Romaine Sawyers following a poor clearance and sidestepped nicely before firing in left-footed from more than 20 yards.

Diangana then reacted sharply to head in Filip Krovinovic's deflected shot for his second to ruin the afternoon for new Luton manager Graeme Jones.

It was the former Baggies assistant manager's first meeting with Albion since both he and head coach Darren Moore were sacked by the club in March.

And a disappointing result, which leaves Luton with just one point from three games, could have been worse if Charlie Austin had not hit the inside of the post late in the game, shortly after coming on.

Albion are one of five teams with seven points after three games, having again come from behind to win 2-1 as they did on the opening day at Nottingham Forest.

They have won their opening two away league matches for the first time since 2009-10, when they went on to win promotion from the Championship.

The Baggies ended Luton's 28-game unbeaten home league record, the Hatters having not been beaten at Kenilworth Road since losing 2-1 to Accrington Stanley back in their League Two days in March 2018.

Luton now face three successive away games - at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday, Barnsley next Saturday and then Cardiff City in the Carabao Cup.

Albion host Reading at home on Wednesday, before Saturday's trip to Derby.

Luton Town manager Graeme Jones told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"Looking at the first half, if you'd thought one of the two sides was an ex-Premier League side, you'd have said it was us.

"We dominated the ball in the first 45 minutes. We showed in that first half that we're good enough.

"But we dropped off and gave them the space and Diangana then made a difference for West Brom.

"You earn the right to score and they did with their intent when they put him on. But West Brom didn't score two goals. We gave them two goals."

West Bromwich Albion head coach Slaven Bilic told BBC WM:

"A great three points. Luton are a good team, with a brave manager who likes to play football.

"We weren't brave enough in the first half, The final ball and the movement was not there. We needed a bit of spark and we got it from Grady.

"We had help from a deflection for Grady's second goal, but you have to be there to benefit and in the first half we weren't.

"Grady did exactly what I wanted. He helped the team and the team helped him."
