Minister for National Planning and Monitoring Richard Maru says cabinet has approved the 2020 census at a cost of K250 million kina. Minister Maru says this is an increase in budget by K100 million compared to the last census in 2011. However, he says the past census was a failure because it was 2 years late in terms of providing the census report to the state and all the stakeholders. Issues were also raised on the credibility and accuracy of the 2011 census. Thus, according to Maru, the last census in 2011 was a failure. But the Minister assures the country that the government will not fail in this upcoming census. The government has brought in one of the best global experts - Mercedita Erandio Tia who will work with the 2020 Census Team as the Chief Technical Advisor on the Census. Ms Tia is attached with the UN Organization - UNFPA. Maru says the work on the 2020 Census has already started, adding the results of the census will come out in the first quarter of 2022 which is two years after the event. That is the Government’s plan and timeline says Maru. Next : Sam Koim To Head IRC Comments are closed.
