Video: Preseason high school volleyball rankings Youthful Flower Mound team starts at No. 1 after 2018 Texas 6A title.
Things are bigger in Texas, expectations included.
Eight Lone Star State teams dot the 2019 MaxPreps preseason Top 25 rankings and none has bigger aspirations than those of Flower Mound, last year's 6A champion which finished No. 19 in our final national rankings.
A youthful team in 2018 led by hitters Kaylee Cox and Angelique Cyr, along with libero Sarah Martinez and setter Caroline Dykes, Flower Mound returned to the court scorching in 2019, posting a 5-0 mark and grabbing a season-opening tournament title.
Given the experience, depth and well-rounded nature, the Jaguars open as the MaxPreps preseason No. 1. They'll have plenty of Texas competition, in addition to tradition volleyball powers hunting them. Fellow Texans Ridge Point, Plano West, Byron Nelson and Lovejoy all reside in the Top 25 to start the season.
California powers Mater Dei, Cathedral Catholic and Redondo Union start in the Top 5 along with last year's national champion Assumption (Louisville, Ky.).
Redondo Union (Nalani Iosia and Kami Miner) and Assumption (Anna DeBeer and Rylee Rader) each return a pair of All-Americans, while Mater Dei enters 2019 with Mia Tuaniga.
New Castle (Ind.) and Sterling (Ill.) stand out as Midwest powers with each squad having a sister duo powering them. The Indiana Trojans are led by Melanie and Mabrey Shaffmaster, each earning All-American status last season, while the Golden Warriors' sibling tandem of Bree and Brooklyn Borum teams with Lexi Rodriguez to power the Illinois champions.
1. Flower Mound (Texas), 5-0 in 2019; 43-7, No. 19 2018 finishKey returners
Kaylee Cox | Jr. | OH | 524 kills, 599 digs
Angelique Cyr | Jr. | OH | 450 kills
Sarah Martinez | Sr. | L | 835 digs
Key losses
Abby Butler, Emily Merrick, Reagan Hooper
Outlook: The Jaguars return key cogs from a young squad that won the Texas 6A title in 2018. They debuted as the top team in the Texas coaches poll, blitzed to a season-opening tournament title and return their top two hitters in Cox and Cyr, an Arizona State commit. The two hitters will benefit from Dykes' return as she was second on the team last season in assists to the graduated Hooper. Martinez, meanwhile, led Flower Mound in digs. While the Jaguars are still young, they possess championship experience and that bodes well for a second straight Texas title ... and perhaps more.

Outlook: The defending MaxPreps National Champions must find a way to replace Nazor, Basham and Martin, but All-Americans Rader, an Ohio State commit, and DeBeer, a Louisville commit, give coach Ron Kordes help to lessen that sting. When you've won 21 state titles, including seven of the past nine, reloading is the path over rebuilding. The Rockets carry at 59-match win streak into the 2019 season.
