Former Opposition Leader and petitioner Don Pomb Polye is calling on the Electoral Commissioner, Patilias Gamato to review his decision in choosing Port Moresby as the venue for the judicial recount of the Kandep Open Seat. He recommended that the most neutral and ideal venues for the recount are Goroka, Mt Hagen, Minj and Kundiawa and not Port Moresby. Polye has expressed concerns that it will be very costly for him to fly his scrutineers back and forth, citing the trial of Kandep Election Petition at the Waigani Court House last year cost him over K100, 000. Mr Polye clarified that Kandep is not one of the most volatile districts in the country as Gamato claimed. "Kandep is NOT volatile at present. "What is the justifiable reason for bringing Kandep's 10 boxes down while Hela Regionals are only 12 boxes? One can see that there is NO LOGIC in his decision.
“The decision shows that something is fishy," he said. The massacre last week in Tari-Pori Electorate in Hela made a big statement in itself that the place is so volatile yet the Commissioner Gamato selected Tari as the ideal venue for judicial recount for Hela Regional Seat, he said. Polye said in a letter signed off by community leaders of surrounding villages in Wabag Town assured Gamato that Wabag is the most ideal place for the re-counting, despite the venue being ruled out by the court in its decision.
