Jarred Rome’s accomplishments as a discus thrower are almost too many to count.
The 1995 Marysville Pilchuck High School graduate was a six-time collegiate All-American while at Boise State University, won men’s national championships in 2005 and 2012, and was a member of the U.S. Olympic team in 2004 and 2012.
Now he can add Hall of Famer to his list.
Rome headlines the 2019 induction class into the Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame, the committee announced Tuesday.
Rome was one of six athletes selected for induction this year, which marks 10 years worth of inductees. One coach, one team and one sports contributor were also selected.
In addition to Rome, the athletes selected were:
— Brenda Dobbelaar-Morris, softball. The 1989 Edmonds High School graduate was a star at Pacific Lutheran University, where she was a two-time NAIA All-American, and she was a member of the 1991 U.S. national team that won gold at the Pan American Games.
— Dave Lyon, skiing. The 1981 Snohomish High School graduate was a collegiate standout, being named an NCAA All-American in 1985, 1986 and 1987 while at the University of Wyoming. He raced professionally through 1990.
— Eleanor McElvaine, rowing. The 1981 Cascade High School graduate was a four-year member of the women’s crew team at the University of Washington, helping the Huskies claim gold medals at nationals from 1983-85.
— Orlando Steinhauer, football: The 1991 Lynnwood High School graduate was one of the best players ever produced by Western Washington University, being named to the school’s All-Century Team at cornerback and punt returner. He went on to a 12-year professional career in the Canadian Football League, where he was a five-time all-star.
— Carl Zaretzke, auto racing. The Arlington High School graduate began racing at Evergreen Speedway in 1966 and is considered the track’s first superstar. He won eight straight Figure Eight Auto Racing season championships in the 1970s and won three NASCAR Superstock Oval Championships in the 1980s.
The coach being inducted is:
— Troy Summers, boxing. Summers was the longtime coach of the Everett Firefighters Boxing Team, as well as being involved in coaching at the national level. He coached Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame inductee Robert Shannon to a 1983 Junior World Championship, as well as his son Bret (also a Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame inductee) to a 1976 national championship.
The team being inducted is:
— 1984 Woodway High School girls basketball. The Warriors were just the second team from Snohomish County to win a girls basketball state championship. Woodway went 25-2, winning Wesco, Northwest District and Region I titles. The Warriors defeated North Kitsap 54-52 in the state title game, with Kelly Joy being named to the All-Tournament Team and Carol Olson setting a tournament single-game assists record with 11.
The contributor being inducted is:
— Jim Piccolo, athletic administrator. Piccolo was the athletic director at Stanwood High School from 1984-2006. He developed several programs at Stanwood, including the Booster Club, Athletic/Academic Awards Night, the Athletic Training Program and the Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2000 he was named the National Athletic Director of the Year by the National Alliance for Health, P.E., Recreation and Dance.
The 2019 class will be officially inducted during the Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet on Sept. 18 at the Edward D. Hansen Conference Center at Angel of the Winds Arena.
