Cedar Park Christian head football coach Butch Goncharoff has been announced as the running backs coach for the new Seattle XFL team.
The Seattle franchise, set to begin play when the XFL relaunches its league next February, announced Goncharoff as one of six additions to its coaching staff Wednesday via Twitter.
CPC athletic director Todd Lundberg confirmed with The Herald via email Thursday that Goncharoff remains the Eagles’ football coach. The XFL season runs from February through April, whereas the high school football season takes place in the fall.
“The Cedar Park Christian Administration supports his involvement in his additional career opportunity,” Lundberg said.
Goncharoff is entering his third season at the helm of CPC’s football program. Last year, he guided the Eagles to the North Sound Conference title and a 7-2 campaign, which ended with a Week 10 playoff loss to Mount Baker. It marked CPC’s most wins in a season since 2011.
Prior to his time at CPC, Goncharoff was the coach at Bellevue High School for 16 seasons. He guided the Wolverines to 11 Class 3A state titles, but was removed from his job in 2016 after an investigation found the program had committed wide-ranging violations of state rules.
Seattle is one of eight cities that will have an XFL team for the professional football league’s relaunch next year. The league has been significantly rebranded since its one-year stint in 2001.
Jim Zorn, a former Seattle Seahawks quarterback and former NFL coach, is the Seattle XFL franchise’s coach and general manager.
