Detective Found Dead By Brooklyn Beach After Manhunt: Reports

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — An NYPD homicide detective was found dead in a Brooklyn park after his disappearance sparked an enormous manhunt, according to reports.

Joe Calabrese, reportedly in his late 50s, had what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his head when police found him in Plumb Beach Thursday afternoon, the New York Post reported.

The Brooklyn South homicide squad detective was last seen leaving Maimonides Medical Center, the Borough Park hospital where his wife was receiving treatment, at about 2 a.m., according to the Post.

His car was found abandoned near Plumb Beach, south of the Belt Parkway about one hour later, triggering a massive manhunt with K-9 dogs, boats, helicopters, and about 100 police officers, the Daily News reported.

Calabrese was found just one day after NYPD Queens North deputy chief Steven Silks fatally shot himself in the head in an unmarked patrol car.
