EXPERIMENT: GOOGLE FREE ANDROID USAGE

2019 June 03

I’m gearing up for an experiment: I want to use my Android phone without GApps. Completely without. That also means no installing applications from Google Play, no cheating via Titanium Backup. Sideloading is allowed iff the application has an official download on its own website. Other allowed sources: F-Droid, Humble App, maybe Amazon App Store.

For a few apps, I already have either a replacement, or the same app on F-Droid. For others, I’m still looking:

Same app on F-Droid:

  • ConnectBot
  • Conversations
  • Fedilab
  • VLC
  • ownCloud

Replacement app on F-Droid:

  • Aegis Authenticator (replacing Authy / Google Authenticator)
  • DAVx5 (replacing dmfs.org’s CalDAV-Sync and CardDAV-Sync)
  • FireFox Lite (replacing FireFox)
  • Kore (replacing Kodi Remote)
  • SlimSocial (replacing Plume)

Suggestions for replacements welcome:

  • 3G WatchDog
  • APG
  • AndFTP
  • Banking4
  • Battle.Net Authenticator
  • ConvertPad
  • DB Navigator (maybe Oeffi?)
  • DWD WarnWetter
  • Das Oertliche
  • Hello Guest WiFi
  • LED Space
  • NINA
  • NetIQ Advanced Authenticator
  • OctoAndroid
  • QuickPic
  • SMS Backup and Restore
  • Screebl
  • Steam Link
  • Sygic
  • Titanium Backup
  • TuneIn Radio
  • Twitch
  • aCalendar+

Also various “mediatheken” like KIKA, ZDF and others I would like to continue to use.

Any suggestions are highly welcome!
