Cypress (Calif.) defeated Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.) 2-0 in the championship game, ending what turned out to be a very balanced season in Division 1 of the Southern Section playoffs.
As a result, seven teams from the section find a spot in the MaxPreps Top 50 National Baseball Rankings, but figuring out where those seven should be ranked is not an easy venture.
Consider the following: Cypress defeated Harvard-Westlake for the championship, but had losses to Orange Lutheran and Mira Costa to go with wins over Orange Lutheran, La Mirada and Yucaipa. Harvard-Westlake had wins over Orange Lutheran, Huntington Beach and Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks), but also had losses to Orange Lutheran and Notre Dame.
Video: Top 25 national baseball rankingsMovement happening as season winds down. Meanwhile, Orange Lutheran captured the National High School Invitational, but had losses to Harvard-Westlake, Cypress and Notre Dame. And then there is Notre Dame, which lost in the quarterfinals of the section playoffs to Mira Costa, but also had two wins over Harvard-Westlake and a win over Orange Lutheran.
What it all means is that the Southern Section once again produced some outstanding teams. While the high-level of competition prevents teams from going undefeated on the season, it does allow for more teams to be considered among the best in the nation.
Thus Cypress rises to No. 5 this week, with the possibility of moving higher as playoffs in Texas and North Carolina move to completion. Harvard-Westlake drops to No. 17, Notre Dame is No. 18 and Orange Lutheran is No. 19 and Huntington Beach is 22. La Mirada finishes outside the Top 25 at No. 32 while Yucaipa is No. 35.
IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) maintains its top spot while Argyle (Texas) and Georgetown (Texas) remain at Nos. 2 and 3. Previous No. 4 Colleyville Heritage (Texas) lost a game in its quarterfinal series, but advanced to the next round. As a result, the Panthers dropped six places to No. 10. New Hanover (Wilmington, N.C.) is the new No. 4.
Dropped out: No. 22 Bolles (Jacksonville), No. 23 Collierville (Tenn.), No. 26 Blessed Trinity (Roswell, Ga.), No. 28 Mitchell (New Port Richey, Fla.), No. 30 Myers Park (Charlotte, N.C.), No. 32 St. Rita (Chicago), No. 36 Bob Jones (Madison, Ala.), Mesquite (Gilbert, Ariz.), No. 43 St. Augustine Prep (Richland, N.J.), No. 44 Jackson (Massillon, Ohio), No. 47 Crest (Shelby, N.C.), No. 49 Prosper (Texas), No. 50 Memorial (Houston).
Player of the Week: Chad Ricker, Argyle. In putting the Eagles into the regional semifinals, Ricker threw a five-inning no-hitter against Brownwood in a 22-0 win and also had two home runs. He also had a home run in the other game in the series.
Prospect of the Week: Matt Thompson, Cypress Ranch. In the first game of a three-game set with Round Rock, Thompson struck out 12 for the win. He also had a triple and two RBI in the rubber match of the series to lead Cypress Ranch into the regional semifinals.
Game of the Week: Georgetown 4, Porter 3 in 14 innings. Georgetown held off a game Porter team that had two pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts over 14 innings. The Eagles got the win in the bottom of the 14th when Wyatt Childress singled with two outs, moved to second on a walk and came home on Ty Tilson's walkoff double.
Game to Watch: Calvary Christian vs. Calvary Christian Academy. The two teams played in the Class 4A championship game last year with Calvary Christian Academy ending Calvary Christian's 60-game winning streak. This year, they meet in the Class 4A semifinals on Wednesday.
Streaks: Silo (Okla.) ends the season with 40 straight wins after winning the final two games of 2018 and all 33 of its games in 2019. Including the fall season, Silo is 65-1 during the 2018-19 school year and coach Billy Jack Bowen, in his 33rd season, has a career record of 2,041 and 404 during the fall and spring seasons. However Newman Catholic (Iowa) could move past Silo for the top active win streak. Newman Catholic (40-1) finished the 2018 season with 26 straight wins and begins its season on Tuesday (Iowa plays baseball in the spring).
