SIPITANG MP Yamani Hafez Musa, who has not taken his oath in Parliament, should be held responsible for the destruction of a forest reserve in Tawau, said Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin.
Large tracts of jungle in Tawau were cleared in 2013 for starting the country’s first geothermal plant by the Tawau Green Energy Geothermal Power Plant.
Chan said Yamani Hafez is former Sabah chief minister Musa Aman’s son and is the majority shareholder of the Tawau Green Energy Geothermal Power Plant.
“I have been fighting against the controversial project since five years ago, when I was Sri Tanjong assemblyman.
“It has come to the end. The project has been cancelled, but a large area of virgin forest reserves has been logged, a RM35 million grant spent but no physical project progress seen.”
Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin had said the geothermal power plant project, which should have been operational by December 31, 2017, has been scrapped.
She said the project site was now abandoned and overgrown with weeds.
The government through the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda) decided to cancel the approval on August 29, she said.
Yeo said the 37 megawatt generation incentive quota from the project would be redistributed to other viable renewable energy projects especially bio-gas, biomass and hydroelectric. – December 7, 2018.
