NEW YORK — It's finally happening. Mayor Bill de Blasio will jet off to Iowa on Thursday after officially announcing his run for president, news reports say.

The Democratic mayor will appear on "Good Morning America" Thursday morning with first lady Chirlane McCray. That's where he's expected to announce his 2020 run, according to the New York Post.

De Blasio will then leave for Iowa Thursday afternoon ahead of campaign events there on Friday before heading to South Carolina for more stumping on Saturday and Sunday, the New York Daily News reported.

The mayor will join more than 20 Democrats already vying to unseat President Donald Trump in 2020. He's been mulling a run for months, traveling to early primary states and saying he had not ruled out jumping in the race.

News of de Blasio's campaign was leaked by a local Democratic club in Iowa, which posted a Facebook event listing touting "the first stop on his Presidential announcement tour." The listing — which also spelled the mayor's last name incorrectly — was spotted by high-school journalist Gabe Fleisher before it was replaced with a new one.

De Blasio will be the first New York City mayor to run for president while in office since John Lindsay, who sought the Democratic nomination in 1972.
