NH Primary Source: Progressive group DFA’s online poll shows Sanders with big NH, national leads
THE ‘LEFT’ STILL LOVES BERNIE. An online poll of members and supporters of the nationwide progressive group Democracy for America shows Sen. Bernie Sanders with a huge lead in New Hampshire, with Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Kamala Harris in second and third place, respectively.Sanders also has strong leads nationally as well as in other early voting states and in California, the nation’s most populous state and the state that sends the most delegates to the Democratic National Convention, the results show.DFA made its second the “Presidential Pulse Poll” available on its website from April 1-19 and shared the results first with WMUR. DFA spokesperson Neil Sroka said the poll was open to anyone, but the “overwhelming majority” of participants were DFA members. The New Hampshire results show Sanders with 42.3 percent, Buttigieg with 9.25 percent, Harris with 8.4 percent, former Vice President Joe Biden at 7.9 percent and Sen. Elizabeth Warren with 7.5 percent. The nationwide results have Sanders, with 42.3 percent, leading Warren, with 10.5 percent, followed by Buttigieg at 9.7 percent, Biden at 7.8 percent and Harris at 6.8 percent.DFA said 94,641 votes were cast in the national survey and participants were asked to rank their top three candidates. DFA’s first national “Presidential Pulse Poll,” conducted and released in December, also had Sanders in the lead with 36.1 percent. Biden was in second place at 14.8 percent, while former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke was in third place at 12.3 percent and Warren was fourth at 7.8 percent. Buttigieg did not register in the top 10 in the December poll results.DFA today also released April state-by-state poll results in the three other early voting states – Iowa, Nevada and South Carolina – as well as California, the state with the largest population and most delegates to the national convention. Sanders held commanding leads in those four states, just has he did in New Hampshire.View DFA’s full polling results and analysis here.In a statement, Charles Chamberlain, DFA chair said, “While these new poll results show Bernie Sanders retaining and even strengthening his support among progressives, the big shifts in support for the broad field of candidates we’ve seen over the last three months make it clear that Democracy for America members are very open to changing their minds, discovering new candidates, and reevaluating potential nominees based on the campaigns they run in the months ahead.“Even before this race began, we said Democracy for America’s endorsement was up for grabs in the 2020 Democratic primary. The changes we’ve seen between this poll and our last poll in December shows that the candidates running authentically on a bold, inclusive populist vision for the future of the country clearly have the momentum heading into the next stages of the contest.” Chamberlain said. DFA said it is “committed to pressuring presidential candidates to be progressive leaders, providing opportunities for those running on inclusive populism to connect with its members and conducting multiple Presidential Pulse Polls prior to any potential endorsement vote.”View last week’s New Hampshire Primary Source column here.
