Rafa Benitez reveals his emotions with injured Miguel Almiron set to miss the rest of the season

Newcastle United midfielder Miguel Almiron may have played his last game of the campaign after picking up an injury against Southampton on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Paraguayan, who joined the Magpies in January for £21m, damaged his hamstring in the second half of the 3-1 win at St James' Park and was in tears as he hobbled off the pitch.

With three Premier League games left remaining, Benitez fears the fans may have seen the last of Almiron this season.

"He was working very hard, and it is not easy for a player who was doing well in another country, at a massive club in front of 52,000 fans, to then get injured and maybe have to be out for the rest of the season," Benitez said.

"It is his first injury of this type. He was doing well and the fans love him. It is a hamstring injury, but we will have to see how he is. We will have to speak with the doctor and see how he reacts."

Highlights from Newcastle's 3-1 win over Southampton

Although the win was a major boost to guaranteeing their Premier League survival, Newcastle's medical staff will have their work cut out after losing Almiron, Fabian Schar, and Isaac Hayden in the last 26 minutes.

On the other injury concerns, Benitez added: "Schar was complaining on Friday and we saw him in the first half.

"We weren't very keen to do any substitutions at the start of the second half because we knew we had one or two little problems. In the end, it was like that.

"It is bad for them, but we have other players, and maybe they will get a chance to do their best now."
