Blumers Lawyers CRC Round 2 Wrap
The Queanbeyan derby ended all square, while there were wins for West Belconnen, Woden and Goulburn in Round 2 of the Blumers Lawyers Canberra Raiders Cup.
Queanbeyan Blues 28 (Tries: I Latu, J Wheeler, A Woods, I Cotric, Z Patch; Goals: T Campese 4) drew Queanbeyan Kangaroos 28 (Tries: B Cronan 2, J Baxter, E Sinoti, J Simbiken; Goals: L Cooper 4)
The Queanbeyan derby ended in a stalemate after a tense finale at Seiffert Oval.
The Blues raced out of the blocks and had a try through Isaiah Latu before Jake Wheeler continued his try-scoring form as he forced his way over the line.
The home side continued the lay on the pressure and dominated field position as Aidan Woods barged over to give the Blues a 16-0 lead after 20 minutes.
However the Kangaroos fought their way back into the match when the Blues failed to defuse a bomb and Bryan Cronan made them pay with a try.
Jayden Baxter added a further four points when the prop showed good footwork close to the line. However, Ilija Cotric waltzed over the line to make the halftime score 22-12.
The Blues extended their lead shortly after the break when Zac Patch made a linebreak and Campese added the extras.
The Kangaroos comeback was underway when Eli Sinoti latched on to a Lachlan Cooper crossfield kick and Jeremiah Simbiken added another on the opposite edge.
The Kangaroos levelled the scores on the back of some Bryan Cronan brilliance when the fleet-footed centre stepped his way through the Queanbeyan defence to score
With the match edging towards a draw, Cooper missed field goal attempt before Campese missed for the Blues.
Woden Valley Rams 26 (Tries: T Evans, L Eveston, M Geiger, J Morgan, L Withers; Goals: L Withers 3) d Belconnen United Sharks 10 (Tries: M Woolnough, M Butz; Goals: T Aroha-Tuinauvai)
The Woden Valley Rams claimed their second win of the season after defeating the Belconnen United Sharks at O’Connor.
After an early grind, the Rams opened the scoring through Tom Evans before Michael Geiger doubled the lead.
The Rams added another try when Jeff Morgan latched onto a grubber before the Sharks hit back through Matt Woolnough to make the score 14-6 at halftime.
Lachlan Eveston added a try after the break to help the Rams on their way to victory as the Sharks produced an improved performance but ultimately fell short.
Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 56 (Tries: H Hodge 3, J Aubusson 2, M Worboys 2, N Cornish, I Lanham, L Oakley; Goals: C Hart 8) d Yass Magpies 12 (Tries: T Vanisi, S Davis; Goals: S Davis)
The Goulburn Workers Bulldogs claimed a massive win in Round 2 as they piled on 10 tries against the Yass Magpies.
A hattrick to Haydon Hodge and doubles to James Aubusson and Matt Worboys helped Goulburn on their way as they raced to a 24-0 lead at halftime.
Yass scored two tries in the second half thanks to Shaun Davis and Noa Vanisi but it wasn’t enough as Goulburn claimed their second win of the season.
West Belconnen Warriors 60 (Tries: B Crisp 3, J Veloudos 2, B Loughhead, R McQueen, T Middleton, R Roberts, B Sione, B Withers; Goals: B Crisp 8) d Gungahlin Bulls 18 (Tries: S Bramich, R Cronin, M Fellows; Goals: J Scholes)
The Warriors bounced back from an opening round defeat in style as Brent Crisp scored a hattrick on his return to First Grade.
The playmaker scored a hattrick the previous week in Reserve Grade and delivered again at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval.
John Veloudos also grabbed a double for the Warriors as they scored 11 tries during the match.
The Bulls scored three tries in their first match of the season thanks to Sam Bramich, Ryan Cronin and Matt Fellows but will be hoping for an improved performance in Round 3.
