New NGO formed to improve Bumis’ wellbeing
BEAUFORT: A new non-governmental organisation, Pertubuhan Gagasan Ekonomi Bumiputra Sabah (PGEBS) has been formed on a realization that Bumiputeras need a new platform to improve their economic livelihood which is lagging behind, said PGEBS President Jismith Japong.

He said PGEBS was established and approved by the Registrar of Society (RoS) on Feb 8, 2018 under the Societies Act 1966.

“We have set up PGEBS almost in all parliamentary seats in Sabah including Kimanis, Beaufort and Sipitang, and we have almost 1,000 members.

“Through PGEBS, we can help the Bumiputeras strengthen their economy after seeing poverty among the Bumiputeras still exist and they are still doing business the old fashioned way.” he said after launching the Beaufort chapter Saturday.

“Most Bumiputera entrepreneurs lack training and economic education apart from weak mindset and less motivated.

“That is why we want to start helping the Bumiputeras succeed in the economic field like how to apply for loans and increase their participation in appropriate economic activities and industries across Sabah,” he said.

Jismith said PGEBS will also generate capital allocation, provide capital and prevent members from obtaining loans from non-licensed moneylenders.

“We will strive to get allocation, grants and shares through the State and Federal governments.

“PGEBS will also restructure the structure of small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) apart from providing an ‘Umbrella Concept’ to help Bumiputera entrepreneurs,” he said.

In Beaufort, Jismith said, there are Bumiputera entrepreneurs who ventured into eco-tourism since many areas in the district have huge potential to be turned into tourism attraction.

He said there are also small-time traders who produce food-based items.

He said the association will organize a carnival of entrepreneurs here as an effort to produce successful businessmen and businesswomen.

“There are successful entrepreneurs among PGEBS members and we will expose them and their products to the local communities through the carnival.

“PGEBS has more than 3,000 members in Sabah and membership is expected to increase due to encouraging response from people who understand the objectives in the setting up of PGEBS,” he said.
