Motorists in Northamptonshire are being urged to be vigilant following a recent increase in the number of catalytic converter thefts.
Catalytic converters are part of a car's exhaust system that convert some of the pollutants into less harmful substances.
Over the past few months, thefts have increased across the region, and police officers are encouraging people to take note of crime prevention advice that vehicle owners can use to best protect themselves from becoming a victim of this crime type.
Crime Prevention Team Leader, Paul Golley, said: Every vehicle is susceptible to having their converters stolen.
“We are calling on all car owners to be vigilant following this recent spate of thefts and to call police if they see any suspicious vehicles or activity in their area.
“I would also advise motorists to have a look at our crime prevention advice and if you notice anything untoward, don’t hesitate to get in touch.”
Crime Prevention Advice
- Consider using a catalytic converter protection device or marking system.
- Where possible, park your vehicle in a locked garage or in a parking spot overlooked by residents.
- If you see someone acting suspiciously under a vehicle, report it to police. Obtain as much information as possible, including any vehicle registrations.
- Security lighting, CCTV or alarms may also deter thieves.
