Everett High School is searching for both a new head football coach and a new head boys basketball coach.
Football coach David Coldiron and basketball coach Bryce Levin resigned from their positions earlier this month, Everett School District athletic director Robert Polk confirmed.
Coldiron, who came from Southern California, stepped down after one season with the Seagulls. Everett went 1-8 under Coldiron this past fall, including 1-5 in the Wesco 3A South.
The Seagulls canceled their season finale — a Week 10 crossover game against Stanwood. Differing accounts were provided as to why the contest was canceled.
“I really enjoyed the kids (at Everett),” Coldiron said. “They’re really fantastic. In the short period of time I’ve been there, I’ve had some really great relationships. … I’m really going to miss seeing the development of some of those young players.”
Coldiron said he’s moving to the Tacoma area for personal reasons. He said he’d like to continue coaching, but that he’s not sure where or in what capacity.
“It has nothing to do with Everett,” Coldiron said. “It’s all about the fact that I met a really fantastic woman in my life and she doesn’t live near Everett, so I’m going to need to move because of that.
“I don’t have another job anywhere,” he added. “… When I went in and talked to the principal, I told him, ‘I need to make this move because of my personal life. I know I’ve only been here for a year, but I sure didn’t plan on meeting this really great woman, but I’m glad I did. But she’s just too far away from me to commute, so I’m going to have to step aside and start looking for something else.’ It’s a real leap of faith.”
Coldiron’s departure means Everett will have a third different head football coach in as many seasons.
Coldiron took over for Doug Trainor, who resigned as the Seagulls’ football coach in March of 2018 after three seasons at the helm. At least four Everett assistant football coaches also resigned that month.
Meanwhile, Levin stepped down after eight seasons with the Everett boys basketball program, including the past four as head coach.
The Seagulls went 31-55 in four seasons under Levin, a 2006 Everett High School graduate who went on to play basketball at the University of Puget Sound.
Levin guided his alma mater to a 12-11 record in 2016-17, which was the program’s first winning season in more than a decade. The Seagulls fell just one win short of the state regionals that year.
“It was a great eight years,” Levin said. “I got to coach at all different levels — freshman, JV, varsity. … I really enjoy working with the students, and got to develop a lot of good relationships with players and people in the community.”
Levin said he got married this past fall and plans to start a family soon. He said he’d like to return to coaching at some point, but that juggling a full-time job and basketball had become too much.
“I’m trying to kind of prioritize those two things right now — finding a career and getting a family off to a good start,” Levin said. “And I think to be able to do both of those things would require some cutback in time, effort and energy into basketball, and I don’t want to do that.
“I want to make sure I’m giving 100 percent to what I’m doing, and make sure that the school and kids get what they deserve.”
