While March has officially been named “National Nutrition Month” by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, most of us realize the importance of making educated food choices, implementing sound eating habits and exercising (or at least moving a little) every day

I think eating healthy is a very personal thing – what I eat isn’t necessarily what you should eat, the latest diet that’s all the buzz may NOT be beneficial for your, and our unique needs are constantly changing – there is no cookie cutter solution to nutrition. Yes, I did say cookie – and a cookie may even make the occasional appearance in YOUR healthy eating pattern. I think we can all agree the importance of keeping a consistent, nourishing eating plan that’s filled with tasty foods and keeps your personal “fueling” needs in mind — and sometimes that can be hard when you’re always on the go. Read on to get my “Nutrition is Personal”  – General Tips for Unique Needs and discover products I’ve recently discovered and LOVE that are helping me be my best me and are suitable for a wide range of dietary eating patterns!

Vee Tee microwave rice

Eat What YOUR Body Needs: I’m thinking about that time I gave up most of my carbs . . . including rice. Bad idea on so many levels. The only reason I did it was that “everybody” was doing it – ditching carbs. But, my runs failed, I had no energy, I hated life. So, I started introducing whole grains back into my diet, and YAY, that’s just what I needed.  When I found VeeTee’s Thai Jasmine Rice and VeeTee’s Wholegrain Brown Rice & Quinoa grabbing some quick and legit food to fuel my runs and workouts because some so easy. All I had do was peel back the lid on this microwavable rice (or rice quinoa blend) and zap for 2 minutes – no fuss, no mess and easy to take for an on-the-go lunch. I eat the rice plain, with a little Ghee or mix in some leftover protein and veggies for a well-rounded meal in minutes – plus it’s non-GMO and has no yucky stuff (and gluten free and vegan if those fit your dietary needs).

wonder kombucha

What You Drink Counts: Many beverages are quite lacking in nutrition – soda, many sports drinks and alcoholic beverages come to mind. I like to make sure I’m staying healthy but not sabotaging my healthy diet by mainly drinking water – but occasionally my taste buds are screaming for something “special.” Kombucha has always been a go-to special drink for me, because I also appreciate the gut-health benefits – and while it’s fermented, it’s not alcoholic.  Recently, I’ve been enjoying the new  Wonder Drink Prebiotic Kombucha – it’s the first and only kombucha with Xylo-oligosaccharides, a plant-based, organic prebiotic fiber that shown to selectively nourish naturally occurring probiotic bacteria in the gut. There is some sugar (10g) but only a fraction of the amount found in a can of soda (39g+). It’s certified organic, guaranteed non-alcoholic, Non-GMO, vegan and gluten free.

Bet on Breakfast: While nutrition is personal and not everyone’s needs are the same, one thing I’ve notice after reading nutrition articles for years is that the people who are most consistently stay in their ideal weight range eat breakfast every day – they are not breakfast skippers. But sometimes getting breakfast when you’re late and rushing out the door seems impossible – at least for me! If I haven’t meal-prepped any of my favorite homemade breakfasts, I’m still NOT going to skip breakfast and head for the drive-thru. Instead, I grab a healthy, on-the-go options like an Açaí Bowl, Overnight Oats, or Smoothie from Happy Healthy Co. Hurray for this smoothie delivery company that ships healthy smoothies (and other yummies) in single-portion containers right to your doorstep on dry ice. Those single-serve containers are ideal for portion control if on a weight loss journey and mornings when you are too tired to measure! Everything is nonGMO, vegan and produced in a nut-free facility.

I love these Happy Healthy Co. products so much, I’m almost at a loss for words – on wait, no I’m not! There are five amazing flavors of healthy smoothies including using various combinations of brain and body nourishing ingredients like Green Tea, Apple, Spinach, Mango, Pineapple, Coconut, Mint, Spinach, Beets, Cacao Nibs, Banana, Carrots, Date, Sweet Potato, Chia Seeds, Blueberry, Cucumber, Honeydew Melon, Flax Seed, Hemp Seed, and more (all you do is blend in your own milk or water) and enjoy. The three flavors of oatmeal cups can be enjoyed hot or cold (I like to stir in my favorite collagen powder) and the healthy Açaí bowl can be treated the same – it is so delicious with Açaí, Oats, Honey, Apples, Pomegranate, Blueberries.

Power Your Day. Just like skipping, skimping and scrimping on meals doesn’t usually pay off – instead it takes away my energy, makes it hard to recover from workouts, and gets me so hangry that I end up scarfing down everything I shouldn’t later in the day. Instead, a better option for me is to boost my smoothies or coffee with Nutiva Organic MCT Powder Vanilla to get that energizing effect of medium-chain triglycerides that is beneficial the metabolism, brain health, weight loss and more. And, when making dinner Nutiva Organic Squeezable Steam Refined Coconut Oil is a winner for nearly every recipe thanks to the neutral scent and flavor (not coconut-y at all) and high smoke point. These are great products for vegan, keto and paleo diets if any of those are your thing.

Seek out Super Foods: Whatever your dietary concerns, I suggest you seek out superfoods. Superfoods are “super” because they are nutritionally dense and offer high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidant and/or other nutrients the human body needs. Small amounts can add up to a big difference in your health. One easy way to get the day started off right is with Laird Superfood Creamers. They are a great upgrade to your morning coffee, by adding energy without the crash (thanks to MCTs and spices and other ingredients that offer functional nutrition). For example, I’m a big advocate of turmeric to help reduce inflammation and speed recovery from my workouts – one of the Laird Superfood Creamers has turmeric in it! The other varieties include Original, Cacao, and Unsweetened. The base of these creamers is coconut milk powder, so the result is a creamy, rich yet dairy-free and vegan option for your coffee – great for pretty much any type diet.

Convenient Foods for Clean Eating including VeeTee Rice, Nutiva Coconut Oil and MTC Powder, Wonder Drink Kombucha, Happy Healthy Co. (smoothies, oatmeal, acai bowls), and Laird Superfood Creamers. 1. You are so right – nutrition is SUCH a personal thing. I can’t stand when someone says you should or shouldn’t be eating a certain way….you don’t know my body, lol! I do love these options though and everything tastes really yummy!

    • OR when some food is perceived as “bad” and other food “good” . . all food is good, it’s just that some is more nutritionally dense than other choices.
