The ITV drama's eighth series came to an end this evening, 22 years after it first aired on TV.

This series has been one of the most heartbreaking ever as Jenny (Fay Ripley) and Pete try to deal with her breast cancer diagnosis.

Speaking to the Mirror, actress Fay Ripley has said that she feels "hugely relieved" after receiving messages following her character's struggle with breast cancer.

The actress, 52, said: “I’m so hugely relieved that I don’t appear to have let people down.

“That was the very thing I was most nervous about. I didn’t want to let people down who were genuinely going through this. What I’m playing is a story – for other people it’s their lives. A misrepresentation would be awful, people take it really seriously.

“I feel such an outpouring of people’s personal stories to me.”

One woman told Fay: “As a breast cancer survivor all I can say is wow! You have got it spot on!” Another said: “Nearly 11 years on since my diagnosis and still so emotional to watch. You’ve played it so right.”
