Hulu is “a very important strategic asset for our owners,” the streaming platform’s SVP Originals Craig Erwich said during TCA on Monday. He was asked about the near future of his company, which will become majority owned by Disney following that company’s acquisition of Fox assets.
Noting Hulu’s double-digit subscriber growth in 2018 to 25 million — “the fastest growing in the US”, Erwich said, “you don’t get that kind of growth without the support of our ownership.”
Erwich does not expect Hulu’s programming strategy to change after the Disney merger. “We will continue the strategy of offering a lot of choice in a wide variety of genres. I don’t anticipate that changing at all.”
At Disney, Hulu, which combines AVOD and SVOD models, will co-exist alongside the upcoming Disney+ streaming service. Hulu has a broad programming scope, while Disney+ is being reportedly envisioned as a more family-oriented service.
