Kota Kinabalu: Members of the Sabah Big Bikers Association traded their leather jackets and rugged boots for Baju Melayu as they came together for the first time to celebrate Hari Raya at the Likas Stadium, here, Saturday. Osman Ahmed, who took over as the new SBBA President previously held by Angus Wong, said the turnout was unexpected as some came all the way from Lawas, Sipitang and Labuan.

"This is the first time SBBA is holding a Hari Raya celebration together for its members and their families," he said, adding that they will continue to hold the event in times to come.

The biker with 18 years of riding experience said it was high time to promote high-powered motorcycling activities across Sabah and Asia.

He said they have held biking programmes called "brotherhood" with fellow bikers from the Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei and Sarawak, and are now looking into how to further promote biking activities in Sabah.

He also said SBBA is registered with the Sports Commission and currently has 200 members in the State, in addition to engaging with big bikers from Tawau, Sandakan, Sepilok and several from the State capital.

"Bikers may look rugged and fierce because of the way they dress. But road safety is our utmost priority when it comes to riding. In fact, many of our members are disciplined when it comes to road safety," he said.

He said last year there was zero fatal accidents involving SBBA members, adding that they also plan to organise a road safety course for members to further promote road safety.

Osman, who owns several bikes, among them a touring motorcycle, a Harley Davidson Trike bike and a BMW high-powered bike, has rode to Indonesia, Brunei, Kuching, Tawau, Singapore and across the peninsula.

He said in addition to riding, SBBA has and will continue to engage in community programmes to help those in need.

He also invited those with high-powered bikes of 500cc above and has a 'B' full licence to be part of the SBBA family and promote not only high-power biking in Sabah but also brotherhood and community works for the people. - Sherell Jeffrey
