Platinum will never not be a stunning, stylish hair color. But anyone who's attempted to maintain it knows how hard it can be to keep it from getting a bit yellow; hell, anyone with nearly any shade of blonde hair is warned against brassiness like it's a terrifying ghost story. But what if I told you that a little — OK, a lot — of warmth can look incredible? The orangey-yellow mustard-inspired hair color that's been growing in popularity on Instagram is proof of that.

Colorists have been using the hashtag #mustardhair on photos of an unexpected shade of deep-yet-vibrant blonde that's giving faded pastels a run for its money. The spicy shade of yellow is often shown with hints of brown and ginger — tones that help make it especially wearable with a huge variety of skin tones.

Chris Weber Mirlach, stylist and co-founder of Vancouver's Vanilla Loft salon, gave blogger Alanna Durkovich, mustard hair by first highlighting her hair with bleach so the color he mixed blends with her natural color and gives it a more natural-looking feel — and orange is a major part of making that mix super-flattering: "My biggest advice is mixing some orange into the yellow to get that perfect mustard color — just yellow can look very green or neon," he tells Allure.

Even colorists themselves can't resist trying mustard blonde on their own heads. Tuscon stylist Savanna Roth let her colleague Mariah Haga give her the gorgeous color after a corrective bleach-out, hashtagging it #mustardhair but also calling the almost ombré look "marigold." Sav then "passed the torch," giving a more rooty version of the shade to her own client.
