Kota Kinabalu: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) division head for Kota Kinabalu, Datuk Christina Liew, made it clear Wednesday that she enjoys the support of 14 of the 26 divisions in Sabah to continue as the party's State Leadership Council (MPN) chairperson.

All of them, except those for Penampang, Keningau and Pensiangan who could not be present because they were in Kuala Lumpur, gathered with Liew as a show of support at a press conference at Hyatt Regency Kinabalu, Wednesday.

Together with Liew were the division heads for Putatan, Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Sipitang, Semporna, Batu Sapi, Kota Kinabatangan, Kimanis, Papar, Tuaran and Labuan.

Putatan MP Awang Husaini Sahari, who is also head for Putatan and representing all the divisions, said they were there to show their undivided support to the decision made by party President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to appoint Liew as the MPN Sabah chairperson.

"The appointment for the MPN Sabah chairperson was made based on the majority and party constitution," he said.

Prior to Anwar's recent visit to Sabah for a consultation with all division heads in the State, there was a courtesy visit made to him to submit a memorandum of support from the 15 divisions for Liew to be retained as head of the MPN Sabah to ensure the stability of the new State Government.

"We fully support the party president's decision, which was made after consultation with all the divisions in Sabah, in entrusting Liew with the responsibility to continue leading MPN Sabah.

"History will record the contribution made by Liew and previous MPN Sabah leaders who have saved the party from two previous migration tsunami and in helping to topple the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration in Sabah," he said.

He said they hope all division heads in Sabah will respect the president's decision (to retain Liew) and continue moving forward to manage the party, especially during the current challenging political situation.

Awang Husaini said they were also concerned over the latest development in the party which caused Nurul Izzah to resign as the party's vice president and MPN Penang chairperson.

"We hope Nurul will reconsider her decision because her victory with the highest votes is a mandate from the party members. The people, especially the younger generation, have placed high hope on her as among future leaders of the country and in continuing the reformation agenda," he said.

The heads also urged the party's president and supreme leadership to take disciplinary action against any member who criticised the decision made by the Political Bureau chaired by the president in endorsing each appointment for the posts in the party.

"We hope the president will stick to the decision on the appointment of the MPN Sabah chairperson, especially for Sabah and Penang, which also represents the aspiration and voices of the women who represent a big segment of voters in the election," he said.

Liew, who is also Deputy Chief Minister cum Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, hoped the press conference will end all the talk and speculation on the MPN Sabah leadership.

She said she will be calling for a meeting to appoint leaders to sit in the State MPN, adding the 11 heads who were not pleased with her appointment would also be involved. - Larry Ralon
