The long-awaited final stretch of Claiborne Parkway is set to open to vehicular traffic soon. But the exact day is still up in the air.
Electronic traffic signs posted in the area indicated the date would be on or around this Friday — December 14. However, Virginia DOT officials tell The Burn that the cold weather has slowed down the final work to complete the road and the opening date is still to be determined.
As of this week, the top layers of asphalt are still being laid down and the finishing touches to the extension are being added. The new roadway also includes a wide footpath on the western side for walkers and joggers.
The project is the final stretch of Claiborne Parkway and will extend the busy road from Ryan Road up to Croson Lane (OK, technically Ravenglass Drive), providing a large four-lane roadway for traffic between the Broadlands and the rest of Ashburn to the north and Brambleton to the south.
Previously the main avenue for traffic south to Brambleton was either Loudoun County Parkway to the east, or a narrow two-lane, pothole-filled stretch of Belmont Ridge Road, which many drivers feel is unsafe.
