Michael Rogers's 1963 Ford Capri
|
EnFord realized that they were missing a car in the Personel/Sports line so designed an entirely new car, engine, transmission for the 61-64 Capri. At first they put the 1340cc engine with a non syncro wide ratio tranny from their new saloon. This was the First "PRODUCTION" engine developed by Cosworth for the Lotus Super 7. Needless to say it wasn't enough for the 2000# Capri, so was soon updated to 1498cc and a full syncro box. This helped but there was pressure for MORE performance--the Brits race any and Everything-- so Cosworth was called in and added their majjic touch with weber carburation, headers, bigger valves more compression etc. Finally in 63, the Capri had a chance warring with the 1500 cc MG-A, Sunbeam Alpine etc. BUT--they'd moved on to 1600cc's a classic example of too little too late, typical of giant corps!
Ford decided to abandon the car so it wouldn't compete with the upcoming Mustang, there was little or NO promotion for it in the US mags and it died.
