Fremont's Rotary International group celebrates the opening of an Interact club at Ross High School for students to develop leadership skills.

FREMONT - A new Rotary-sponsored Interact club celebrated its start at Fremont Ross High School Monday night, as the group welcomed 70 students as charter members.

Fremont Rotary Club leaders Angelica Rinehart, Scott Lang and Roger Kuns attended the Interact charter ceremony celebration and urged students to take the opportunity to do good in the community and develop their leadership skills.

Interact, which is short for "International Action," involves more than 468,000 students in 20,372 clubs worldwide. It encourages its members to make a difference in their schools and communities.

It is a Rotary International service club for young people ages 12-18 designed to develop leadership skills.

Fremont City Schools Superintendent Jon Detwiler speaks at the celebration Monday night for the launch of the Rotary-sponsored Interact club at Ross High School.

Fremont City Schools Superintendent Jon Detwiler, also a Rotarian, said he traveled to Peru this summer on a medical mission and met up with local Rotarians who were helping their communities.

"Those were people that wanted to do good things for people," Detwiler said.

Susan Frye, the Interact club's school adviser at Ross, told students there were sign-up sheets in her office for a variety of local community service projects.

Frye said those projects include adopting six children in Fremont as part of the Community Christmas initiative, making blankets to give to students in the school district's elementary schools, and visiting the School of Hope to help students there make Christmas gifts.

Detwiler said Fremont Rotary Club worked with Frye to incorporate Fremont Ross' Link membership into forming the new Interact club.

The Link is a group of 9th-to-12th grade students at Ross who educate others in the community about the importance of healthy choices and giving back.

The superintendent said Fremont's Rotary Club will provide some financial backing for Interact and service opportunities.
