State roundup: Local girls soccer teams eliminated

King’s volleyball team takes 3rd place at 1A tournament.

The Edmonds-Woodway girls soccer team lost to Gig Harbor 4-3 in a Class 3A state tournament quarterfinal match Saturday at Roy Anderson Field in Gig Harbor.

The Tides beat the Warriors 5-3 in a shootout.

“I couldn’t be prouder. (We) left everything on the field,” Warriors coach Bill LeCompte said. “Going into it we knew we had a pretty tough matchup.”

The Warriors (17-4) forced overtime in dramatic fashion when Chiara Serafini found Kyra Hicks off a free kick just before the end of stoppage time.

Hicks’ goal answered the Tides’ go-ahead score in stoppage time that had Edmonds-Woodway on the brink of elimination, and the teams played a pair of scoreless overtime periods to force a shootout.

Hicks put the Warriors up 2-1 with her first goal in the 57th minute, but Gig Harbor answered back in the 78th to tie the game at 2-2.

“When you have to of the best teams in the state going at each other, you’re going to get one of those back-and-forth games,” LeCompte said.

Dara Stotland’s goal in the 13th minute kicked off the scoring for Edmonds-Woodway.

Kamiakin 4, Shorewood 0

Shorewood (12-7-2) allowed four first-half goals and couldn’t muster anything on offense as the Thunderbirds were eliminated from the 3A state tournament with a quarterfinal loss to Kamiakin at Neil F. Lampson Stadium in Kennewick.

Skyline 2, Lake Stevens 0

Lake Stevens’ season came to an end with a 4A state tournament quarterfinal loss to host Skyline.

The Vikings finish the season with a 15-4-1 record.

King’s Way Christian 3, King’s 1

King’s run at a second straight 1A state title came to an end with a loss to host King’s Way Christian in state tournament quarterfinal matchup. The Knights (18-3) allowed more than one goal for just the third time this season.

4A Wes-King district tournament

Kamiak (12-7) notched its first 4A state tournament berth since 2014 with a 3-2 victory over North Creek in a 4A Wes-King district tournament matchup at Bothell High School. The Knights have won six of their past seven games and are one of three Wesco 4A teams (Lake Stevens and Monroe) to come out of the bi-district tournament with a state bid.

Glacier Peak (11-8) had two chances to advance to state, but the Grizzlies’ season ended with losses to Issaquah (3-0) and North Creek (3-1).

3A District 1 tournament

Stanwood and Oak Harbor clinched berths to the 3A state tournament in winner-to-state, loser-out contests in the 3A District 1 tournament at Marysville Pilchuck High School.

The Spartans (14-3) took down Lynnwood (11-7) 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-21 to advance to the state tournament for the third time in the past four years.

The Wildcats (13-4) knocked off Everett (9-5) 3-1 and are heading to state for the first time since 2013.

1A state tournament

King’s fell one win short of a chance to claim its second straight 1A state title, losing to Charles Wright Academy 3-2 in a 1A state tournament semifinal match at Yakima Valley SunDome.

The Knights (20-2) went on to notch a third-place finish with a 3-1 victory over Granger.
