Popular former Rochester Red Wings infielder Wayne Krenchicki dies at 64

Former Rochester Red Wings infielder Wayne Krenchicki makes a throw to first base at Silver Stadium.

Former Rochester Red Wings and Cincinnati Reds infielder Wayne Krenchicki died on Tuesday at the age of 64.

Mr. Krenchicki played for the Red Wings from 1978-81. He was drafted as the No. 7 overall pick by the Baltimore Orioles in the 1976 Major League Baseball draft while playing college baseball at the University of Miami.

During his eight-year tenure in the major leagues, Mr. Krenchicki played for the Orioles, Detroit Tigers,and had two stints with Cincinnati.

His last appearance in the majors was with the Montreal Expos in 1986. He would spend most of his post-professional baseball career managing minor league teams including for the Milwaukee Brewers from 1991-94.

In 2007, he won the Atlantic League championship with the Newark Bears. Mr. Krenchicki was inducted in the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 1990 and lived in Bradenton, Florida.
