Top 50 high school football dynasties of all time

Some dynasties only last about a decade. These include the likes of Allen (Texas), which has posted all of its state championships in the past 11 seasons. Or IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.), which has only been in existence for six seasons.

Then, there are teams that have excellent runs under one coach, but struggle to maintain that excellence during other periods. Coral Gables is such a team as it won four national championships under coach Nick Kotys, but hasn't won another since. Likewise Reagan (Austin, Texas) won three national titles under Travis Raven, but hasn't won a state title since he left in 1970.

There are others still that have long periods of success throughout the entirety of the program's history. These are the types of dynasties MaxPreps is trying to identify in its list of The Top 50 Greatest Football Dynasties.

In order to select the top 50 dynasties, football programs were awarded rating points based on the number of state and national championships won, the total number of wins in the program's history, the team's winning percentage and the average number of wins per year. Other factors included the number of different decades in which a team won a state title, the longest period of time a school went without winning a state title and the number of state titles won in a row.

Also taken into account were the size of the school and the size of the state where the school competed. The categories were also weighted differently to emphasize the categories that held more importance in determining the dynasty.

Following are the top 50 Greatest Dynasties, topped by a team that has won more national titles than any other school.

De La Salle did not field a team until 1973 and actually had a losing overall record before Bob Ladouceur took over in 1979 ... De La Salle won 399 games and lost 25 during Ladouceur's tenure ... The 19 state championships include eight championships won in the CIF state bowl game series and 11 mythical state titles based on selections made by Cal-Hi Sports ... The Spartans rank second on the list in national championships, winning percentage and wins per year.
