Video: Xcellent 25 High School Football RankingsSt. John Bosco rolls past Mater Dei to cement No. 1 spot. In the game of the year,
St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) proved why it was the No. 1 team in our preseason Top 25 with a dominant 41-18 win over
Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), last year's national champion.
It was the eighth 1 vs. 2 matchup since 2000 and the sixth time the game was decided by double-digits.
The Braves'
DJ Uiagalelei showed why he's the top rated quarterback from the Class of 2020. The 5-star prospect threw for nearly 300 yards and five scores — three to
Jake Bailey. The defense held the Monarchs to their lowest point total since 2014 and the win ensures St. John Bosco controls its own destiny to become the 2018 national champions.
The loss for Mater Dei dropped the Monarchs three spots to No. 5 in this week's Top 25.
See the video above for a complete look at this week's Xcellent 25 rankings presented by the Army National Guard. Only one new team that joined this week, another Trinity League squad —
JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.). The Lions are 7-1 with their lone loss coming to No. 1 St. John Bosco by seven points. They have quality wins over Pinnacle (Phoenix), Calabasas (Calif.), Bishop Amat (La Puente, Calif.), Servite (Anaheim, Calif.) and Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.). They get another crack at a Top 5 team Friday against Mater Dei.
Three teams moved up one spot in the Top 5 as
Allen (Texas),
St. John's (Washington, D.C.), and
Central (Miami) all moved ahead of Mater Dei.
The defending 6A-D1 Texas state champion Eagles have won 22 straight games and handed Plano East (Plano, Texas) its first loss of the season with a 74-36 win. It was the most points Allen has scored since
Kyler Murray's junior season back in 2013.
Grant Tisdale, a 2019 Ole Miss commit, finished the game with nearly 400 yards of total offense and six touchdowns.
St. John's won its 14th consecutive game rolling past a legit Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) team. The Cadets outscored the Falcons 21-0 in the second half and won 31-10.
Sol-Jay Maiava threw for four touchdowns with 4-star wide receiver
Rakim Jarrett and 2019 Connecticut commit
Cam Ross each hauling in two touchdowns. Things don't get easier for the Cadets, who've played one of the toughest schedules in the nation, with WCAC games against DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) and Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.) left to close out the regular season.
Miami Central's lone loss came against St. John's on the road in five overtimes and the Rockets have had some big-time wins this year led by a road win over No. 13
St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Circle Oct. 26 on your calendar as one of the biggest showdowns this season with Miami Central squaring off against No. 12
Carol City (Miami, Fla.) with the winner most likely clinching the 6A-District 16 crown.
