Toyota has received a patent for its "Dual Mode Vehicle With Wheel Rotors" fling car concept, and released details to the public.

The design incorporates the machine's rotors into the wheels. When operating in driving mode, the rotors fold into the interior of the wheel rim. For flight, the rotors extend on arms above the aircraft. According to the patent, the four wheels of the vehicle operate in the traditional manner. Each wheel also includes at least one rotor housed fully within the rim of the wheel beneath a wheel cover in land mode. A former Air Force Reserve pilot who went on to work at Lockheed where he became an SR-71 test pilot has Gone West. Darryl Greenamyer passed away Monday in Indio, CA at age 82. Greenamyer used connections made at Lockheed's Skunk Works to modify racing planes. He won his first unlimited class race at Reno in 1965, and went on to become the third most successful competitor in the history of the races. The two pilots who were aboard a Dassault Falcon 50 jet that was involved in a runway excursion at Greenville Downtown Airport last week were not type rated in the jet, according to the FAA. Both pilots Stephen Fox and John Caswell were fatally injured in the accident. Authorities have determined that Caswell was the pilot of the airplane, but he was not rated to serve as "Pilot in Command" of a Falcon 50 and was qualified for "Second in Command Privileges" for that aircraft. The other pilot, Stephen Fox, was not rated for jets at all, holding only a Private Pilot Certificate for VFR flight. Caswell did hold an ATP certificate and was type rated in Learjets and Gulfstream jets, according to FAA records. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
