New to the Forum and am amazed with all the great information! Have a 55 TF 1500 that was my Dad's and has not been driven much in the last 20 years. While replacing the rear brake hose

I discovered this tank just in front of the rear axle. Any clue to what it was used for? There are small fittings attached but no lines to be found. A friend who raced Midgets in the 60's mentioned that sometimes an oil pressure tank was added to capture oil pressure to be used on the next start. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Tom W.

There's a good chance that you are on to something. The Accusump, an accumulator for engine oil pressure was introduced in the '60s. This may have been a attempt to copy it and the oiliness around the one fitting may indicate that. However, an accumulator would only need one fitting and should have been mounted vertically if a small tank is to be the accumulator. More sophisticated accumulators have either a bladder ( like a well tank) or a piston between the air and oil. The weld seam in the middle of the tank appears to be machine made and the weld around the clean brass fitting appears to be stick. We don't know what the plumbing inside looks like. It may well have been an attempt to copy the Accusump.

Thanks Scot for your reply and information on the Accusump. I am going to remove the tank it and if that provides any other clues I will post it. The car has been in the family for 46 years and I am
working on getting it back on the road again.
Regards,
Tom
